In a riveting clash at North Sydney Oval, Adelaide Strikers emerged victorious over Sydney Sixers by a narrow margin in the fifth match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024.

Asked to bat first, the Strikers’ started shakily with Katie Mack (1 off 3) and Madeline Penna (0 off 1) falling early. Star batter Laura Wolvaardt contributed a brisk 18 off 16 balls, hitting two fours and a six, but was soon dismissed as the Sixers tightened their grip.
The innings gained momentum as Bridget Patterson (44 off 32) anchored from one end, hitting six fours and a six to set a solid foundation. The standout performance, however, came from Amanda Wellington, who played a dynamic knock of 40 off just 16 balls, with six fours and two sixes. Her power hitting in the late overs proved decisive. Orla Prendergast also chipped in with a valuable 39 off 31, with four boundaries.
For the Sixers, Ashleigh Gardner bowled brilliantly, taking 4/32 in her four overs, while Lauren Cheatle delivered an impactful spell of 3/35. Skipper Ellyse Perry (2/21) also claimed two wickets in her 3-over spell, but could not prevent the Strikers from posting a competitive total of 171.

Sydney Sixers Women Innings
Chasing 172 for victory, the Sixers’ innings had a rocky start as Hollie Armitage (5 off 6) was dismissed early. Perry then took charge, crafting a blazing 54 off 28 balls, showcasing her skill with 11 boundaries. Her knock provided the necessary impetus to the chase, and she built a partnership with Sarah Bryce, who smashed 62 off 44 deliveries, including five fours and two sixes.
Despite Perry’s heroics, the Sixers faced setbacks with frequent wickets.

Adelaide’s bowlers, led by Anesu Mushangwe, who claimed 3/27, continued to chip away. Megan Schutt (2/28) and Darcie Brown (2/25) also bowled effectively, limiting scoring opportunities and breaking crucial partnerships. Wellington, having starred with the bat, picked up two wickets as well, maintaining her all-round impact on the game.
As the innings progressed, the Sixers found themselves losing momentum. Elsa Hunter tried to revive the chase with 28 off 22, but her dismissal further increased the pressure. With the lower order failing to contribute, Perry & Co. were restricted to 160/9, falling short by 11 runs.
