The FA Community Shield one-off game between Arsenal and Manchester City took place on Sunday, August 6 at Wembley Stadium. The cagey game found its breakthrough moment when Cole Palmer put City in front in the 77th minute. However, Leandro Trossard’s deflected finish in the 101st minute stretched the game to penalties where the Gunner came out victorious by a margin of 4-1. “That’s why we are here — to win trophies for this football club and make it successful,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said after the game.
“I don’t know. I just wanted to grab that trophy as quickly as possible and then we can think about the next. Just the joy of seeing so many happy and proud people and the connection again doing it for our supporters in Wembley feels very different, and that’s great. We know it’s football — you win a trophy today but tomorrow you have to be training, ” Arteta replied when asked if this win increases his expectations from the upcoming Premier League season.
‘We would love to win today, absolutely, but sometimes…’ – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola
Notably, the FA Community Shield marked the start of the new regulations under which referees add the exact same time in the injury time as the time lost in injuries, celebrations, substitutions, etc. in an effort to reduce time wasting. Arteta said that he was in favour of the new rule. “I think it’s really good to do that because it was going too far I think and now teams are going to have to think twice. Now we have to be prepared to play 100 minutes because it’s going to happen every single week,” he said.
At the same time, it was a rare end for Pep Guardiola on the losing side in a final game. The master tactician called the one-off game a ‘closely-fought’ one. “In the last 15-20 minutes of the first half they were better. Second half we were much better. We would love to win today, absolutely, but sometimes you have to accept it and give credit to your opponent,” he told reporters after the game. “We have to accept it. Now games will be 100 minutes that’s for sure,” he added on the new rule.
