In the fifth and final T20I of the England Women’s tour of New Zealand 2024, at Basin Reserve, Wellington, England Women secured a well-deserved victory against the home team, New Zealand Women, thereby clinching the series 4-1.

Sophie Ecclestone, Nat Sciver-Brunt restrict New Zealand at a below-par total

New Zealand Women, after winning the toss, opted to bat first. The New Zealand Women’s innings saw a modest total of 136/6 in their allocated 20 overs. Despite contributions from Brooke Halliday (33 runs off 40 balls) and a stellar knock from Izzy Gaze (51 runs off 28 balls), the team struggled to accelerate the scoring rate against the disciplined bowling attack of England Women.

Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers for England Women, claiming three crucial wickets while conceding 30 runs in her spell. Apart from Ecclestone, star all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt also shined with the ball, taking a couple of scalps while conceding 24 runs in her quota of 4 overs.

Nat Sciver, Heather Knight take England over the finish line

Chasing a target of 137 runs, England Women managed to achieve the required total with relative ease, reaching 138/5 in just 18.5 overs. Heather Knight led the charge with a composed innings of 35 runs off 28 balls, well supported by Nat Sciver’s 31 runs off 27 balls. Despite some hiccups in the middle order, England Women held their nerve to secure the victory.

Nat Sciver was awarded the Player of the Match for her all-round performance, contributing significantly with both bat and ball for England Women. With this win, England Women concluded their T20I series against New Zealand on a high note, showcasing their dominance in the shortest format. Both sides will now lock horns in the 3-match ODI leg, starting April 01 at Basin Reserve.

26 T20I half-centuries between Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr since October 2019. Before today no other New Zealand player had passed 50 in that time in a women’s T20I.
