Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has made a fearless set of for T20 World Cup 2026, predictions that included a pointed tactical jab at Australian pacer Pat Cummins. With the tournament set to kick off on February 7, Rashid’s comments have set the tone for a high-intensity battle between the subcontinental underdogs and the established giants of the game.

Rashid Khan stirs buzz with Pat Cummins jibe during T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final predictions

During an exclusive interview with Sports Tak on January 30, Rashid was asked to name his four semi-finalists for the upcoming World Cup. In a move that immediately went viral, Rashid deliberately excluded Australia from his list, serving as a direct retort to a famous remark made by Pat Cummins during the 2024 edition.

“Aapko last 2024 World Cup ka yaad hai? Ek interview thi jahan kisine ek team ka naam liya tha aur kaha baaki aap teen ka daal dein (You remember the 2024 World Cup? There was an interview where someone named one team and told to add the other three),” Rashid was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.

At that time, when Cummins was asked to name his top four teams, he famously replied: “Definitely Australia, and then you can choose whichever [other three] you want to… I don’t care. You can pick.” Rashid mirrored this nonchalance in his 2026 prediction, pointedly leaving the Aussies out. His subtle ‘dig’ reflects the growing confidence of the Afghanistan side, which famously knocked Australia out of the 2024 tournament to reach their first-ever semi-final.

Rashid named four teams he believes have the strongest winning players and tactical depth to navigate the 55-match tournament. He predicted that India, Afghanistan, South Africa and England would be the ones to reach the final four. He noted that India, as defending champions led by Suryakumar Yadav, are the favorites at home, while he remains confident in his own side’s ability to dominate bigger teams. He also highlighted South Africa as a lock to qualify from their group and praised England as a side that consistently performs under pressure. Rashid emphasized that while the team cherishes the memories of their historic 2024 run, they are focused on the competitive nature of the current game where any team can win in any condition.
