In a clarifying move that has put an end to intense social media speculation, Shubman Gill’s close friend Agni Chopra breaks silence. The cricketer son of acclaimed filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra and film critic Anupama Chopra has officially addressed the viral claims that linked him to a high-profile overseas tournament on February 8, 2026. By speaking out, the 27-year-old has finally set the record straight regarding his professional standing and his future in the sport.
Anupama Chopra son cricketer Agni breaks silence on PSL registration reports
The controversy erupted after a document reportedly from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) surfaced on X (formerly Twitter), showing a player named ‘Agni Dev Chopra’ listed at Serial No. 822. The listing identified him as a USA citizen (he was born in Detroit) with a base price of PKR 6,000,000 (approximately ₹19.6 lakh). Given the complex sporting ties between India and Pakistan, the news triggered an immediate wave of social media scrutiny.

Taking to Instagram Stories to set the record straight, Agni issued a firm denial:
“Fake and misleading reports are being circulated in my name regarding a tournament. I would like to clarify that I have not enrolled for the PSL. I remain fully focused on my cricket journey in the USA and my long-term career goals. I request everyone not to fall prey to misinformation.”
His mother, renowned film critic Anupama, further amplified the denial by sharing the statement on her own platforms. While his name appeared on an initial draft of the auction list, reports indicate that the PCB has since released a modified list with his name removed.

Agni Chopra’s transition to USA Cricket: Records and future goals
Agni’s name carries significant weight in the cricketing world due to his historic start in Indian domestic cricket. Representing Mizoram, he became the first player in first-class history to score centuries in each of his first four matches. By the end of his stint in India, he had amassed 1,804 first-class runs at a staggering average of 94.94.
- BCCI Recognition: He was the recipient of the Madhavrao Scindia Award for the 2023–24 season as the top run-getter in the Ranji Trophy Plate League.
- The Regulatory Shift: Holding an American passport, Agni’s career path was influenced by a 2024 BCCI rule change that restricts non-Indian passport holders from participating in domestic cricket in India.
- Major League Cricket (MLC): In 2025, Agni officially moved into the American system, signing with MI New York (a sister franchise of Mumbai Indians) for $50,000 in the MLC domestic draft.
