The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered a convincing 32-run victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 14, 2026, at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium. The win marked CSK’s second consecutive triumph in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, lifting them to eighth place in the points table.
For KKR, however, the campaign continues to spiral downward. The franchise remains winless after five matches, rooted firmly at the bottom of the standings. Despite flashes of individual brilliance, their inability to execute cohesive game plans has repeatedly cost them crucial moments in matches.
Ravichandran Ashwin lambasts KKR’s strategy after yet another defeat
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin did not hold back while dissecting KKR’s performance, openly criticizing their tactical decisions on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin questioned the decision to persist with Sunil Narine as an opener despite his lack of batting form. While acknowledging Narine’s ability as a power-hitter, Ashwin pointed out that the all-rounder has not been actively batting in competitive leagues, raising concerns about his readiness for such a crucial role.
“KKR sent Sunil Narine to open, that is not wrong. Sunil Narine is a fantastic striker of the ball, but he is not in form only. He is not batting in any league anywhere, he only bowls. I know they want more intent, but Rahane was playing with a strike rate of 180 in the powerplay. Rahane’s strike rate dips only after the sixth over,” said Ashwin..
He further highlighted that Ajinkya Rahane had been scoring briskly during the powerplay, maintaining a strike rate of around 180. According to Ashwin, Rahane’s scoring rate typically slows only after the initial six overs, making the team’s approach even more puzzling. Another key issue raised was the pairing of Rahane with young Angkrish Raghuvanshi, which Ashwin described as a “tempo killer.” He emphasized that such combinations stalled momentum at a critical phase of the innings.
Ashwin did not stop at tactical errors, delivering a broader critique of KKR’s current state. He pointed out a lack of squad depth, momentum, and confidence, suggesting that repeated mistakes stem from deeper structural issues within the team setup.
“Then Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi batted together, that is also a tempo killer. KKR made a lot of mistakes. They don’t have the players, they don’t have the depth, they don’t have momentum, there is no confidence. After all of this, you cannot go and make so many mistakes,” added Ashwin.

KKR’s path to recovery
For KKR to turn their season around, immediate structural corrections are essential. The first priority lies in stabilizing the top order. Constant experimentation has disrupted rhythm, and the team must now commit to a settled batting combination.
A key decision revolves around Cameron Green. The management needs to define a clear role for the Australian all-rounder, ideally placing him at number three. This position would allow Green to build an innings and anchor the batting lineup, rather than forcing him into a finishing role that does not align with his strengths.
Bowling concerns also remain a significant hurdle. KKR’s struggles in the death overs have been evident, with inconsistent execution allowing opponents to capitalize late in the innings. Addressing this issue may require introducing a reliable overseas pacer or demanding greater discipline from domestic seamers.
Additionally, over-reliance on Narine to control the middle overs will only yield results if the pace attack provides early breakthroughs. Without that support, even the most economical spells become less impactful.
