As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 enters a crucial phase, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) seem to be finding their rhythm again, climbing the points table with clinical performances. However, amidst the team’s resurgence, a significant shadow remains: the inconsistent form of their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad. While the “Yellow Army” is celebrated for its tactical stability, the skipper’s personal struggle at the top of the order has sparked an intense debate among experts regarding his role in the playing XI.
CSK finding momentum amidst Ruturaj Gaikwad’s lean patch
After a shaky start to the season, the Super Kings have successfully navigated their way back to winning ways. The middle order has stepped up, and the bowling unit looks sharper than ever. Yet, the opening slot remains a point of vulnerability. Gaikwad, usually the bedrock of the CSK innings, has struggled to provide the explosive starts required in the Powerplay. While the team is winning, his inability to convert starts or maintain a high strike rate has put undue pressure on the subsequent batters, leading many to wonder if a tactical reshuffle is necessary to optimize the team’s balance.
Irfan Pathan picks ideal batting number of Ruturaj to regain his form
Former Indian all-rounder and cricket analyst Irfan Pathan has weighed in on the dilemma, suggesting that Gaikwad’s current batting philosophy is better suited for the one-down position rather than the opening slot. Analyzing the skipper’s recent performance, Pathan pointed out that Gaikwad’s low-risk approach is hindering the team’s Powerplay momentum.
“Ruturaj Gaikwad’s batting approach definitely needs attention. If his approach in the last match is considered, he faced 17 balls and his control percentage was excellent. It means he did not take much risk and was not looking to play too aggressively. He did not want to lose his wicket,” said Pathan on his YouTube channel.
Pathan reckoned that if Gaikwad intends to play the role of an anchor who prioritizes wicket preservation, he should move down the order.
“Then just play at number three. If he wants to continue with this approach, he should bat at No. 3. But if he wants to open, then as Ruturaj Gaikwad, his approach will have to change,” added Pathan.
Managing the slump: The road ahead for CSK
Dealing with a captain’s lean patch is a delicate task for any franchise. For CSK, the solution may lie in flexibility. By moving Gaikwad to No. 3, the management could pair a more aggressive “pinch-hitter” or a natural stroke-maker with the other opener to maximize the Powerplay overs. This shift would allow Gaikwad the space to build an innings without the immediate pressure of the field restrictions.
If Gaikwad can rediscover his aggressive intent, he remains one of the league’s most dangerous openers. If not, a move to the anchor role at No. 3 might be exactly what both he and Chennai need to secure another title.
