Punjab Kings beat Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026

The 24th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium turned into a run-fest as Punjab Kings produced a commanding chase to defeat Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets. After opting to bowl first, PBKS executed their plan to near perfection, chasing down a daunting 196-run target in just 16.3 overs, leaving the home side searching for answers.

Quinton de Kock’s brilliance powers MI to 195

Mumbai Indians were largely carried by a sensational knock from Quinton de Kock, who played one of the finest innings of the season. The left-hander smashed 112 off just 60 balls, peppering the boundary with eight fours and seven towering sixes. Despite an early setback with Ryan Rickelton falling cheaply and Suryakumar Yadav departing for a duck, de Kock anchored the innings with authority.

Naman Dhir provided crucial support with a well-paced 50 off 31 deliveries, ensuring MI maintained momentum through the middle overs. However, the hosts struggled to capitalize fully in the death overs as Punjab’s bowlers pulled things back. Arshdeep Singh was the standout performer with the ball, claiming three key wickets for just 22 runs, while Marco Jansen and Shashank Singh chipped in with a wicket each to restrict MI to 195/6.

Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer dismantle MI bowling attack

In response, Punjab Kings came out with fearless intent. Priyansh Arya set the tone early with a brisk 15 off 9 balls, but it was Prabhsimran Singh who took center stage with a blistering 80 off 39 deliveries. His aggressive strokeplay, featuring 11 fours and 2 sixes, put MI under immense pressure right from the powerplay.

Shreyas Iyer then ensured there were no hiccups in the chase, producing a classy 66 off 35 balls. Combining elegance with power, Iyer stitched together a match-defining partnership that dismantled Mumbai’s bowling attack. Cooper Connolly and Marcus Stoinis added finishing touches with quick contributions, as PBKS cruised to victory with plenty of overs to spare.

MI bowlers struggle under pressure

Mumbai Indians’ bowling unit had a forgettable outing as none of the frontline bowlers could make a significant impact. Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar were both expensive, conceding over 40 runs each without picking up wickets. Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar was the only bright spot, claiming two wickets, but lacked adequate support from the other end.

The lack of control in both powerplay and middle overs allowed Punjab’s batters to dominate, making the chase look far easier than expected on a batting-friendly Wankhede surface.
