Sunil Gavaskar takes aim at Jasprit Bumrah for blunder against Lucknow Super Giants following MI’s emphatic triumph in IPL 2026

The 47th match of IPL 2026 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on May 04, 2026, delivered a rollercoaster of emotions as the Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a vital six-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In a season where both teams have struggled to find consistency, this encounter was billed as a battle for survival at the bottom of the table. While MI eventually chased down a mammoth target of 229 with eight balls to spare, the game was nearly defined by a rare lapse in discipline from India’s premier speedster, Jasprit Bumrah.

Despite the eventual win, the commentary box was ablaze with criticism during the 14th over of the LSG innings. Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar did not mince words when Bumrah committed what many consider a cardinal sin in limited-overs cricket.

The incident occurred when Bumrah seemingly outfoxed LSG’s Himmat Singh with a deceptive delivery. The batter edged the ball to wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton, sparking wild celebrations in the MI camp. However, the joy was instantly extinguished by the dreaded siren of the no-ball. Replays confirmed Bumrah had overstepped, handing Himmat a reprieve and LSG an extra run plus a free hit.

Gavaskar, known for his high standards regarding technical discipline, blasted the pacer for the blunder. “This is not acceptable. You are a professional cricketer. Wides, I understand. But not no-balls,” Gavaskar fumed on air.

He emphasized that for a bowler of Bumrah’s world-class stature, overstepping at such a crucial juncture of the game, where LSG was looking to accelerate, was a lapse in concentration that MI could ill afford. Bumrah finished his four overs with figures of 0/45, a rare off-day for the leader of the MI attack.

Despite the mid-innings drama, Mumbai Indians displayed an incredible batting masterclass to overcome LSG’s imposing total of 228/5. The foundation was laid by a sensational 143-run opening partnership between the evergreen Rohit Sharma and the Player of the Match, Ryan Rickelton.

Rickelton was in a league of his own, smashing 83 off just 32 balls, a knock laced with 5 boundaries and 8 towering sixes. Not to be outdone, Rohit anchored the chase with a fluent 84 off 44 deliveries. Their aggression meant MI reached the 100-run mark in just 8.1 overs. Even as LSG’s Manimaran Siddharth picked up 2/47 to trigger a slight middle-order wobble, Naman Dhir (23* off 12) and Will Jacks (10* off 4) ensured the chase was completed in 18.4 overs.

Earlier in the evening, LSG had posted a formidable score thanks to Nicholas Pooran’s blistering 63 off 21 balls (SR 300.00). Pooran’s onslaught, supported by Mitchell Marsh’s 44 and a late flourish from Himmat (40* off 31), seemed to have put LSG in the driver’s seat. However, MI’s batting depth proved too much for the Lucknow bowlers. This win moves Mumbai to six points from ten games, while LSG remains at the bottom of the standings with just four points from nine outings.
