In what turned out to be one of the most electrifying matches of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, Mumbai Indians (MI) kept their fading playoff hopes alive with a stunning six-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium on May 4. However, despite the dramatic victory, MI still find themselves languishing in ninth place, with qualification scenarios heavily dependent on both their own performances and results elsewhere.
Chasing a daunting target of 229, MI delivered a statement performance led by their experienced opener Rohit Sharma and emerging star Ryan Rickelton. The duo stitched together a breathtaking 143-run opening partnership that set the tone for one of the best chases of the tournament.

Rohit rolled back the years with a commanding 84 off 44 balls, blending elegance with calculated aggression. At the other end, Rickelton was equally destructive, smashing 83 off just 32 deliveries to dismantle the LSG bowling attack.
The chase, however, wasn’t entirely smooth. A brief middle-order wobble threatened to derail MI’s momentum, but Naman Dhir and Will Jacks showed composure under pressure to guide the team home with eight balls to spare.
Earlier in the match, LSG had posted a formidable 228/5, powered by a sensational knock from Nicholas Pooran, who hammered 63 off just 21 balls. Despite the onslaught, MI’s bowlers staged a strong comeback in the death overs, preventing LSG from crossing the 240-mark — a difference that ultimately proved decisive.
IPL 2026 playoffs qualification scenario for MI
While the victory has injected life into MI’s campaign, their playoff qualification remains a complex equation. Mumbai Indians have four matches remaining, and the equation is simple yet unforgiving — they must win all of them. Doing so would take them to a maximum of 14 points, which is below the traditionally safe qualification mark of 16.
Historically, 16 points has been the benchmark for playoff qualification in the IPL. However, there has been a rare exception — when Royal Challengers Bengaluru qualified with 14 points in 2024 after the league expanded to 10 teams. MI will need a similar twist in the standings to stand a chance.
MI’s current net run rate of -0.649 is a major concern. Even if they manage to win all their remaining matches, they will likely be tied on points with other teams. To gain an edge, MI must secure victories by significant margins to boost their NRR.
Mumbai’s fate is no longer entirely in their own hands. They will need favorable outcomes in other matches, particularly hoping that teams like Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals dominate the mid-table sides. This would ensure that not more than four teams cross the 14-point mark.
