The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi was buzzing with electric energy on the evening of Tuesday, as the 48th match of IPL 2026 unfolded between the Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). With the playoff race intensifying, every delivery carried the weight of a season. DC skipper Axar Patel won the toss and opted to bat first, hoping to set a daunting total on a surface that traditionally assists spinners but offers early movement for the pacers. However, the early narrative of the match was defined by a classic speed vs. skill battle in the powerplay.
Mukesh Choudhary gets revenge wicket of Pathum Nissanka following a six
The highlight of the early exchange was the psychological and tactical warfare between CSK’s left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary and DC’s explosive opener Pathum Nissanka. In the fourth over, Nissanka looked like he was shifting gears, punishing the bowlers with a four and a paddled six that briefly silenced the Yellow Army in the stands. The momentum seemed to be swinging heavily in favour of the Capitals.
However, Choudhary, known for his resilience and ability to bounce back under pressure, provided the perfect response on the final ball of the over (3.6 ov). Having been dispatched for a maximum earlier in the over, Mukesh smartly rolled his fingers over the ball, delivering a deceptive pace-off length delivery. Nissanka, perhaps blinded by the adrenaline of his earlier success, committed to the big heave over the leg side way too early.
The lack of pace caused the ball to take the leading edge and spoon high into the air toward mid-on. Dewald Brevis, showing great composure, back-pedalled from his position to settle under the skier and complete a safe catch. Nissanka departed for 19 off 15 balls, and the roaring Delhi crowd was hushed as Mukesh celebrated his revenge wicket. At that moment, DC found themselves at 29/1, and the CSK bowling unit had officially found their opening.

Delhi Capitals set a competitive target for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026 game
Following the early exit of Nissanka, the Delhi Capitals struggled to find a consistent rhythm against a disciplined CSK bowling attack. The scorecard reflected a series of starts that failed to convert into substantial scores. KL Rahul managed a steady but slow 12 off 13, falling to Akeal Hosein, while Nitish Rana (15) and Karun Nair (13) were both outdone by the crafty spin of Noor Ahmad, who finished with impressive figures of 2/22.
At 69/5 in the 11th over, after Axar Patel fell cheaply for 2, DC looked to be in deep trouble. However, a gritty middle-order resurgence saved the innings. Tristan Stubbs played a crucial anchor role, scoring 38 off 31 balls, but the real spark came from the Impact Player, Sameer Rizvi. Rizvi hammered an unbeaten 40 off 24 balls, striking at 166.66 to push the total past the 150-mark.
DC eventually finished their 20 overs at 155/7. For CSK, Choudhary’s early breakthrough was complemented by Hosein’s clinical 1/19 and Jamie Overton’s tight death bowling. As the teams headed into the break, the win probability sat heavily in favor of CSK, but on a gripping Delhi track, a target of 156 is far from a walk in the park.
