Mohammad Kaif gives his verdict on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's 2027 ODI World Cup chances

As discussions around India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup continue to gather pace, the future of several senior players remains a major talking point. With the tournament still more than a year away, attention has already shifted towards identifying the core group that could represent India on the biggest stage in South Africa.

The upcoming ODI fixtures, including the tour of England, are expected to play an important role in shaping the team’s long-term plans. While younger players continue to push for opportunities, experienced campaigners remain central to India’s ambitions as the team looks to build a squad capable of ending its wait for another 50-over World Cup title.

Mohammad Kaif backs Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the 2027 ODI World Cup

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are capable of featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup despite concerns surrounding age and fitness. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif expressed confidence that the veteran duo would remain part of India’s plans for the marquee tournament.

“I will take the guarantee of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Rohit is working on his fitness, he will push himself and somehow manage to play. Injury happens to everyone, even to youngsters. He has that passion, the temperament is seen in his batting. I feel that the playing XI for the 2027 World Cup will be almost the same team that played in 2023. The majority of the players will be the same. India will be favourites with Bumrah, Kohli, Gill and Hardik,” Kaif said.

According to Kaif, India’s squad for the 2027 World Cup could closely resemble the group that reached the final of the 2023 edition. He highlighted the presence of established match-winners such as Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav and Shubman Gill as key reasons why India would once again start among the favourites.

England ODI series could be a crucial step in the road to 2027

Kaif also emphasized the significance of India’s upcoming ODI series against England, noting that regular exposure to international cricket will be important for senior players who are now focusing primarily on the 50-over format. He acknowledged that English conditions could provide a stern challenge for batters due to the movement available for seam bowlers.

“The conditions in England will be somewhat difficult. The ball certainly moves. No matter how big a player is, he will want to stay in touch with the game. That is why this series is important for Rohit and Virat,” Kaif explained.

The former India cricketer added that the bigger objective for both players would be to assess their mental and technical readiness with the 2027 World Cup firmly in mind. Kaif feels Rohit, in particular, remains highly motivated after India’s heartbreaking defeat in the 2023 World Cup final and could be determined to make one final push for the trophy.

India’s three-match ODI series against England is scheduled to be played on July 14, 16 and 19 at Edgbaston, Cardiff and Lord’s respectively, with all eyes set to be on the experienced duo as they continue their journey towards another World Cup campaign.
