England and India resumed their white-ball rivalry with the opening ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham, as both sides looked to begin the three-match series on a winning note. While England opted to bat first after winning the toss, the visitors responded with a disciplined bowling effort before producing a composed chase to register a comfortable victory.
One of the biggest talking points of the contest came during India’s innings when England speedster Jofra Archer delivered a peach to dismiss Virat Kohli early. The wicket quickly went viral across social media, with fans applauding Archer’s pace and precision.

Archer struck a massive blow in the ninth over of India’s chase by removing Kohli with a superb delivery. After softening the former India captain up with a short ball, the England quick followed it up with a full, straight delivery that rushed Kohli for pace.
Attempting to whip the ball through the leg side, Kohli shuffled across his stumps but completely missed the line of the delivery. The ball struck him flush on the pads right in front of middle stump, leaving umpire Mike Burns with an easy decision as he raised his finger immediately.
Kohli briefly discussed the decision with his batting partner before deciding against using a review, fully aware that the delivery was crashing into the stumps. The veteran batter departed after scoring just five runs from six deliveries, with his innings featuring a solitary boundary.

Shubman Gill guides India to convincing victory despite Archer’s early breakthrough
Although Archer’s wicket gave England early momentum, India recovered brilliantly through skipper Shubman Gill, who anchored the chase with a superb unbeaten 80 before retiring hurt due to cramps. His composed knock laid the perfect foundation after the early dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Kohli.
Gill also shared a crucial 101-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer to steady the innings before Axar Patel and Washington Sundar ensured there were no late hiccups. The duo stitched together an unbeaten century stand, with Axar finishing on 57 not out and Washington remaining unbeaten on 52 as India chased down the target of 259 with six wickets in hand and 4.4 overs to spare.
Earlier in the day, England were bowled out for 258 in 48 overs despite Joe Root’s unbeaten 76 and Liam Dawson’s valuable 68. India dominated with the ball through Axar, who claimed four wickets, while Prasidh Krishna picked up two. Jasprit Bumrah also made a successful return to ODI cricket and helped set the tone with the new ball. The victory handed India a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, while Archer’s fiery dismissal of Kohli remained one of the standout moments from an entertaining contest at Edgbaston.
