Jos Buttler on who can break his T20 record

England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler has identified a player who is most likely to surpass his newly established world record for the most runs in T20 cricket. Fresh from becoming the format’s highest run-scorer, Buttler reckoned the fearless youngster possesses the talent and explosive style needed to one day eclipse his remarkable achievement.

Jos Buttler creates history with record-breaking T20 milestone

Buttler recently climbed to the summit of T20 cricket after becoming the highest run-scorer in the history of the format. Representing Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred Men 2026, the England star played a blistering unbeaten knock of 51 from just 20 deliveries against Welsh Fire to move past West Indies legend Kieron Pollard.

The landmark moment came at Old Trafford, where Buttler launched South Africa pacer Marco Jansen for three consecutive sixes before sealing the chase in emphatic fashion. His innings, played at a stunning strike rate of 250, took his overall T20 tally to 14,833 runs in 522 matches, making him the leading run-getter in the shortest format of the game.

The achievement further cemented Buttler’s legacy as one of the greatest white-ball batters of his generation, having dominated franchise leagues and international cricket for well over a decade.

Buttler names a player who is capable of breaking the world record

Although Buttler’s record appears destined to stand for several years, the England star believes one player has the potential to eventually overtake him.
Speaking to Sky Cricket, Buttler pointed to India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi as his choice to rewrite the record books in the future.

“Yeah it’s really cool actually to think you’ve got the most T20 runs out of everyone. Someone will surpass it one day, and his name’s probably Sooryavanshi. But no, it’s a proud moment,” Buttler said.

The remark reflected Buttler’s admiration for the young Indian, who has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting talents in world cricket with his fearless approach at the top of the order.

Why Buttler believes the teenage star can rewrite T20 history?

Buttler’s prediction is backed by some extraordinary early-career numbers from Suryavanshi. After their first 40 T20 innings as openers, the Indian youngster had already accumulated 1,670 runs, comfortably ahead of Buttler’s 1,590 runs at the same stage of his career. Even more striking is the difference in scoring rate. While Buttler revolutionised powerplay batting with a strike rate of 152.44, Suryavanshi has taken aggression to another level, maintaining an astonishing strike rate of 216.32.

The teenage sensation also reached milestones at a pace unmatched by Buttler. Suryavanshi blasted four T20 centuries in his first 40 innings as an opener, whereas the England star had not registered a single hundred during the equivalent phase of his journey.

His rapid rise has been fuelled by a string of standout performances across formats. Suryavanshi finished as the leading run-scorer at the ICC Under-19 World Cup with 439 runs, followed it up with a record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign, and then starred in India’s T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe, where he was named Player of the Series.
