Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to make a significant addition to their coaching setup ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, with former India pacer expected to take charge as the franchise’s new bowling coach. The appointment brings a familiar face back into the CSK setup, with the experienced cricketer having previously enjoyed a successful playing stint with the franchise.
Former India pacer to Join CSK coaching staff
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Mohit Sharma will join the team’s support staff as the new bowling coach. His appointment was recommended by head coach Zaheer Khan, who will continue to lead the coaching setup. Mohit will replace Eric Simmons in the role and will now take on a new responsibility with a franchise where he has already made a considerable impact as a player. His previous association with CSK lasted across two separate stints and four seasons.
The 38-year-old brings extensive IPL experience to the coaching group. He featured in 120 IPL matches during his playing career and finished with 134 wickets.
“Mohit will join CSK as our new bowling coach. His name was recommended by our head coach Zaheer Khan. Mohit was tremendous with us as a player as well and we hope he will do a great job as bowling coach,” Viswanathan told TimesofIndia.com.

From Purple Cap winner to IPL bowling coach
Mohit’s most memorable IPL season came in 2014 while representing CSK. He finished that campaign with 23 wickets and claimed the Purple Cap, establishing himself as one of the tournament’s leading wicket-takers.
His later IPL career also included a productive spell with Gujarat Titans. After joining the franchise, Mohit enjoyed something of a resurgence, becoming a reliable wicket-taking option through his variations and accuracy. He collected 41 wickets across his two seasons with GT.
Before and between his CSK spells, Mohit also represented Punjab Kings from 2016 to 2018. His most recent IPL appearance came for Delhi Capitals. The Haryana pacer announced his retirement from professional cricket in December last year, bringing an end to a career that included significant domestic, IPL and international achievements.
Mohit’s experience extends beyond franchise cricket, having represented India in both ODIs and T20Is. He played 26 ODIs for the national team and claimed 31 wickets, while his eight T20I appearances produced six wickets. One of the defining moments of his international career came during the 2015 ODI World Cup under MS Dhoni. Mohit finished as India’s joint third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
His return to CSK in a coaching capacity therefore brings together his knowledge of the franchise, IPL experience and international background. With Zaheer recommending him for the position, Mohit will now have the opportunity to work with CSK’s bowlers and contribute from outside the playing XI as the franchise prepares for IPL 2027.
