West Indies have made a late change to their squad ahead of the upcoming five-match T20I series against India, with wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo added as cover for Jewel Andrew.
Andrew suffered a finger injury during the third ODI against India in New Chandigarh on October 3. Although the initial scans have revealed no fracture, the youngster remains under observation by the West Indies medical team. Jangoo has therefore been brought into the squad as a precautionary option for the T20I series.
The first T20I will be played in Lucknow on October 6, followed by matches in Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
Jewel Andrew’s injury prompts change in WI squad
Andrew picked up the injury while attempting to complete a catch during India’s innings in the third ODI. The 19-year-old successfully caught Naman Dhir off the bowling of Gudakesh Motie, but took a blow to his finger in the process.
Andrew left the field for medical assessment and was subsequently taken for an X-ray. The scans provided some relief, with no fracture detected, but the West Indies team management is continuing to monitor his condition.
He was unable to bat when West Indies began their record chase of 352 in the third ODI. Captain Shai Hope moved up the order as the side successfully chased down India’s total by five wickets.
While Andrew has not been ruled out of the T20I series, the addition of Jangoo gives West Indies greater cover behind the stumps and adds another experienced batting option.
Amir Jangoo earns call-up after excellent ODI series
Jangoo’s inclusion comes at an ideal time for the 29-year-old, who enjoyed an outstanding ODI series against India.
The wicketkeeper-batter scored 58 not out in the first ODI, followed it with a brilliant 114 in the second match, and then added 67 in the third ODI. He finished the series with 239 runs, making him the third-highest run-scorer across both teams behind India’s skipper Shubman Gill and West Indies captain Shai Hope.
That consistency makes Jangoo a natural choice to provide cover for Andrew. His recent performances have also given the West Indies management another player carrying confidence into the T20I leg of the tour.
Jangoo has already represented West Indies in seven T20Is since making his international debut in December 2024. He has scored 163 runs in the format at a strike rate of 120.74.
