Virat Kohli’s spokesperson breaks silence on Premanand Maharaj controversy

Virat Kohli’s spokesperson has issued a clarification regarding the controversy surrounding the batter’s visits to spiritual leader Premanand Maharaj Ji’s ashram in Vrindavan. The clarification came after India completed their three-match ODI series against the West Indies, in which Kohli was part of the team.

The controversy emerged after a claim circulated on social media alleging that Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma were paid ₹5 crore for their first visit to the ashram. The allegation was attributed to Falahari Maharaj Dinesh Sharma, who also claimed that a property builder lobby and a private Rajasthan-based company were involved.

Virat Kohli’s spokesperson rejects ₹5 crore payment claim

Kohli’s spokesperson has categorically rejected the allegation, describing it as false, baseless and factually incorrect. The spokesperson also urged media organisations to verify such claims before reporting or amplifying them.

“We would like to categorically state that the claims made by Falahari Maharaj Dinesh Sharma in regards to Mr. Virat Kohli are completely false, baseless and factually incorrect. Mr. Virat Kohli visits Premanand Maharaj Ji purely out of his deep faith and reverence for Maharaj Ji. We strongly refute these claims and urge the media to exercise due diligence, verify facts before reporting or amplifying such statements, and report responsibly.”

There is also no independent evidence, transaction record, contract or official statement available to substantiate the alleged payment. Kohli and Anushka first visited Premanand Maharaj Ji in 2023 and have since made several visits to the ashram.

Kohli set for New Zealand tour after impressive ODI series

The controversy comes shortly after Kohli’s return to India colours in the ODI series against West Indies. The batter made a major impact in the opening match, scoring an unbeaten 139 off just 88 balls, with 10 fours and nine sixes at a strike rate of 157.95. With Kohli now playing only ODI cricket for India, there can be significant gaps between his international assignments.

However, his next appearance is already scheduled, with India set to tour New Zealand later this year. The five-match ODI series will begin on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland. Wellington will host the second ODI, followed by Hamilton for the third, while Bay Oval will stage the final two matches.
