Wiaan Mulder cleans up Mitchell Starc with a brilliant delivery on Day 2 of the 1st Test

Wiaan Mulder produced another important breakthrough for South Africa during the first Test against Australia at Kingsmead in Durban. The all-rounder bowled Mitchell Starc for six in the second session on Day 2, using the second new ball to break through Australia’s lower order.

Australia had won the toss and elected to bat, but South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack kept the visitors under pressure throughout the innings. After Australia slipped to 124/6 on Day 1, Matt Renshaw and Pat Cummins led a determined recovery to keep their side in the contest.

The dismissal came in the 81.3 over when Mulder pitched the ball around middle and leg. The delivery nipped away sharply after pitching, beating Starc’s defence and crashing into the stumps. Starc had little time to react as the ball moved away from him, leaving the Australian batter stunned.

He departed for six off 25 deliveries, with Mulder celebrating his fourth wicket of the innings. The breakthrough came at a crucial stage for South Africa, who were looking to wrap up Australia’s innings before the tail could add more valuable runs. Mulder’s spell had already caused problems for the visitors, and the second new ball gave him another opportunity to trouble the lower order.

Renshaw continued his resistance on Day 2, reaching his second Test century and remaining unbeaten on 126 off 260 balls.

Cummins also contributed 43 before falling to Mulder, while Starc’s dismissal left Australia at 299/8. With Nathan Lyon alongside Renshaw at the crease, Australia were relying on their remaining batters to push the total further.
