Mohammed Shami’s potential return to the Indian cricket team has become a major talking point after former India batter Suresh Raina expressed confidence in the experienced fast bowler’s chances of making a comeback. Following Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s surprise recall to India’s T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, Raina believes Shami could also be on his way back to the national setup.
Shami has remained active in domestic cricket despite being away from international cricket since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. His performances for Bengal and other domestic teams have kept him in contention, although the selectors have yet to announce any decision regarding his return.
Raina’s comments have given Indian cricket fans another reason to hope that one of the country’s most experienced fast bowlers could soon wear the national jersey again.
Suresh Raina backs Mohammed Shami’s India comeback
Speaking at the jersey launch of the Indian Soft Ball Cricket League, Raina discussed Bhuvneshwar’s return to the Indian team and the possibility of Shami following a similar path.
Praising Bhuvneshwar’s discipline and dedication, Raina highlighted how the veteran pacer had worked hard on his fitness to earn another opportunity at the international level.
He then expressed confidence in Shami’s prospects, saying:
“Absolutely, I think he (Mohammed Shami) has done well and played good domestic cricket too. Now it is Bhuvi’s turn, aur Shami bhi aa rahe hain pichhe pichhe, tension mat lijiye.”
Raina’s statement has fuelled speculation about Shami’s potential comeback. However, it is important to note that the former cricketer’s comments represent his personal assessment rather than an official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
When did Shami last play for India?
Shami last represented India during the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March 2025. His most recent Test appearance came in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
Since then, the Bengal fast bowler has continued playing competitive cricket while attempting to strengthen his case for an international return.
His domestic performances have offered encouraging signs. During the 2025-26 season, Shami claimed 37 wickets in seven Ranji Trophy matches and also delivered useful performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
He subsequently impressed for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy, helping his side win the title. These performances have demonstrated that he remains motivated to compete at the highest level.
Can Shami return before the 2027 World Cup?
With less than an year remaining for the 2027 ODI World Cup, India will need to assess their fast-bowling combinations carefully. Shami’s experience in major tournaments could make him an option if he demonstrates consistent form and satisfies the team’s fitness requirements.
India’s upcoming assignments could provide opportunities for the selectors to evaluate experienced bowlers alongside younger alternatives. However, no official announcement has confirmed Shami’s return to the national squad.
For now, the Bengal pacer must continue focusing on his performances and fitness rather than speculation surrounding his future.
