Rishabh Pant ruled out of first two unofficial Tests against New Zealand

India A have suffered a setback ahead of their upcoming unofficial Test series against New Zealand A, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant ruled out of the first two matches due to injury. The development comes at an important stage of India’s preparations for the longer format, as several established players are part of the squad for the tour. With the three-match series set to provide valuable red-ball practice ahead of India’s upcoming Test assignments, Pant’s absence will require a change in the team’s wicketkeeping plans for the opening fixtures.

Why Rishabh Pant is ruled out of the first two unofficial Tests?

Pant sustained a left-side strain while captaining the Rest of India team in the Irani Cup, forcing him out of the first two unofficial Tests on India A’s tour of New Zealand. The wicketkeeper-batter’s availability for the third and final match will be assessed at a later stage, leaving his participation in the remainder of the series uncertain.

Pant’s selection for the New Zealand A series had initially been subject to fitness clearance. However, his latest injury setback means he will miss the opening two games, depriving India A of an experienced international cricketer during a crucial preparation period.

Dhruv Jurel, who has been appointed captain of India A for the tour, will also take responsibility as the team’s first-choice wicketkeeper in Pant’s absence. Jurel’s dual role will be particularly important during the opening fixtures, while the management will have another wicketkeeping option available within the squad. The team will hope to make the most of the series despite Pant’s absence, with the matches offering an opportunity for players to build their red-ball rhythm and strengthen their claims for future international opportunities.

Young domestic star named as Pant’s replacement

India A have named Kumar Kushagra as Pant’s replacement for the first and second unofficial Tests against New Zealand A. The 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter earns the opportunity after producing encouraging performances in first-class cricket in recent matches. Kushagra has scored two centuries in his last three first-class games, underlining his current form in the longer format. His recent run includes a hundred in the Duleep Trophy final and another century against the visiting Australia A side in Puducherry. These performances provide a strong platform for Kushagra as he joins an India A squad featuring several players with international experience. His inclusion also gives the team additional depth in the wicketkeeping department while Jurel takes on the primary responsibilities behind the stumps.

For Kushagra, the tour represents an opportunity to carry his domestic form into an overseas red-ball assignment. His performances in New Zealand could also offer valuable experience against unfamiliar conditions as he continues his development in first-class cricket.

The series carries added significance because it will serve as preparation for India’s upcoming two-Test series, which will be important to the team’s World Test Championship campaign.

With established players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan included in the squad, India A will have several opportunities to assess their red-ball readiness.
