Why did Hardik Pandya-Yashasvi Jaiswal trade stall? Full details on MI and RR negotiations ahead of IPL 2027 auction

The much-discussed Hardik Pandya-Yashasvi Jaiswal trade between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) has reportedly lost momentum ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. The proposed swap, which could have seen Mumbai’s captain move to Rajasthan in exchange for the young Indian opener, generated significant interest among cricket fans. However, the two franchises are no longer holding active discussions, according to recent reports.

The talks were not entirely speculative, as the franchises reportedly explored the possibility a few months ago. However, the negotiations failed to make meaningful progress, leaving the blockbuster trade unlikely at this stage. With the IPL retention deadline approaching on November 15, the situation remains worth monitoring, although neither franchise has officially confirmed a deal.

Why did the Hardik Pandya-Yashasvi Jaiswal trade stall?

MI and RR held discussions about the potential swap, but the talks did not advance significantly. The franchises are not currently engaged in negotiations over the proposed deal.

One major consideration is the value both players bring to their respective teams. Hardik is an experienced all-rounder who offers seam bowling, power-hitting and leadership, while Jaiswal is an established India opener with the potential to anchor Rajasthan’s batting for years.

A trade involving two high-profile players would require both teams to be satisfied with the cricketing and financial implications. Although the exact reasons behind the stalled negotiations have not been officially disclosed, the lack of progress suggests that an agreement was difficult to reach.

Why Rajasthan Royals could consider trading Yashasvi?

From Rajasthan’s perspective, Hardik could offer an additional seam-bowling all-rounder who can contribute in the middle order and provide leadership experience.

The Royals have already undergone a significant change in their squad structure following the trade of former captain Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. Another major deal involving Jaiswal would represent a further reshaping of their core.

However, Rajasthan have another young left-handed opening option in South African batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius. He has been associated with the franchise for the past two seasons, although his IPL appearances have been limited.

Pretorius enjoyed an impressive Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 campaign, scoring 465 runs at a strike rate above 176. His performances could provide Rajasthan with an alternative opening option, but they do not automatically make Jaiswal expendable.

Why Mumbai Indians might hesitate to release Hardik?

Hardik remains a key figure for Mumbai Indians because of his ability to contribute in three departments: batting, bowling and leadership. Finding a like-for-like replacement would be difficult, even if the franchise could secure a talented batter in return.

Jaiswal would strengthen Mumbai’s top order and offer a long-term batting option. However, trading Hardik would leave the five-time champions needing to reassess their all-rounder balance and captaincy plans.

There has also been speculation about Rohit Sharma potentially returning as Mumbai’s captain. However, reports indicate that the franchise has not yet discussed the captaincy question and wants to finalise its coaching setup first.

Will the trade happen before the IPL 2027 retention deadline?

For now, the Hardik-Jaiswal swap appears unlikely. The franchises reportedly held preliminary discussions, but there are no active negotiations, and Jaiswal remains contracted to Rajasthan Royals for at least one more season.

The November 15 retention deadline could bring greater clarity to franchise plans, but there is no guarantee that talks will resume. Both teams must weigh their squad requirements carefully before considering a deal of this magnitude.
