The absence of young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi from India’s playing XI in the opening T20I against New Zealand sparked considerable discussion among Indian cricket fans on social media. With the visitors taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after a thrilling victory in Christchurch, attention has now shifted to the team combination for the second encounter.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s absence from 1st T20I sparks social media debate
Suryavanshi’s omission from the opening match became a talking point among supporters, particularly given his impressive performances in domestic and franchise cricket. Many fans were eager to see the 15-year-old showcase his explosive batting against New Zealand, but the team management opted for a different combination.
Before the series began, India captain Shreyas Iyer had explained that Suryavanshi might have to wait for his opportunity because the team already had two established opening options in Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
The young left-hander had previously represented India at the Asian Games, featuring in the semi-final against Sri Lanka and the gold medal match against Pakistan. However, he did not feature in the subsequent five-match T20I series against the West Indies.
Suryavanshi has already demonstrated his ability to score quickly at the highest level. He accumulated 776 runs for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and has scored 246 runs in eight T20Is for India at an impressive strike rate of 186.36, including two half-centuries.
India batting coach explains how Suryavanshi could feature in the 2nd T20I
Notably, India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has indicated that Suryavanshi could get an opportunity if wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan fails to recover from a groin niggle. Kishan’s fitness concerns could open the door for Suryavanshi to enter India’s playing XI when the two teams meet again on Saturday at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Explaining the decision to send Kishan in at No. 5 during the first T20I, Kotak revealed that the batter had been dealing with a groin strain. The injury also raised doubts about his availability for the second match.
“There was a lot of speculation I have also seen, just because Ishan had a strain in his groin, the batting order was changed,” Kotak told reporters, adding that it was unlikely Kishan would play the next match.
The batting coach further explained that Suryavanshi was among the leading candidates to replace Kishan if the wicketkeeper-batter failed to recover completely.
“If Ishan doesn’t play, unless he recovers completely, which the medical team will advise, Vaibhav could definitely step in for him. He is one of the strongest contenders,” Kotak added.
India take 1-0 lead after sealing win in high-scoring 1st T20I
India began the series with a memorable four-wicket victory, chasing down New Zealand’s formidable total of 225/4 with two deliveries remaining. The visitors finished on 230/6 to complete an impressive run chase and take an early advantage. Glenn Phillips led New Zealand’s batting effort with a blistering 82 off just 40 deliveries.
India responded through an aggressive innings from Samson, who smashed 67 off 33 balls, including eight fours and four sixes. Although New Zealand’s spinners briefly threatened to derail the chase, Iyer contributed a valuable 42 before Naman Dhir delivered a decisive finishing performance with 42 off only 15 balls.
With India leading the series 1-0, the second T20I presents another opportunity to strengthen their position. For Suryavanshi, Kishan’s fitness situation could provide the opening he needs to make his mark on the international stage.
