Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has called time on his international career, bringing an end to a remarkable journey that saw him become one of the most destructive and unpredictable batters in world cricket. The 38-year-old had already retired from ODI cricket in June 2025 and has now decided to step away from T20Is as well as List A and first-class cricket.
Maxwell scored 2,897 runs in 130 T20Is at a strike rate of 154.42, making him Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in the format. His five centuries are also the joint-most in men’s T20I cricket, alongside Rohit Sharma. While he will no longer represent Australia, Maxwell will continue playing for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL). As the ‘Big Show’ begins a new chapter, here are five of his most memorable international innings.
5 greatest innings of Glenn Maxwell in international cricket
1. 201* vs Afghanistan – 2023 (ODI World Cup)

Maxwell produced one of the greatest individual performances in ODI history when he rescued Australia from a seemingly impossible position against Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai. Chasing 292, Australia were reduced to 91/7 and appeared to be heading towards a shock defeat.
However, Maxwell refused to give up despite battling severe cramps and a hamstring injury that left him struggling to move between the wickets. He relied on his remarkable timing and power to take on the Afghanistan bowlers, finding the boundary repeatedly while Pat Cummins held one end.
The pair stitched together an unbeaten 202-run partnership for the eighth wicket, with Maxwell doing the bulk of the scoring. He eventually finished on 201* off just 128 deliveries, smashing 21 fours and 10 sixes. His double-century, completed with a six, guided Australia to an extraordinary three-wicket victory and secured their place in the semi-finals.
2. 145* vs Sri Lanka – 2016 (T20I)

Maxwell delivered a breathtaking batting exhibition against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in 2016 after being promoted to open the innings in the absence of Aaron Finch. It was his first time opening in T20 internationals, but he made the opportunity count in spectacular fashion.
The right-hander took apart the Sri Lankan bowling attack with an astonishing range of strokes, combining conventional shots with reverse sweeps and innovative hitting. He reached his century in just 49 deliveries and continued attacking until the end of the innings.
Maxwell remained unbeaten on 145 off 65 balls, hitting 14 fours and nine sixes. His remarkable effort powered Australia to 263/3, which was then the joint-highest total in men’s T20I cricket. Although he fell short of Finch’s individual record of 156, the innings remains one of the finest displays of T20 batting.
3. 104* vs India – 2023 (T20I)

Maxwell once again showcased his ability to produce extraordinary performances under pressure during the third T20I against India in Guwahati in November 2023. Australia were chasing a challenging target of 223 and needed a special effort to stay alive in the series.
Coming in at number four, Maxwell kept the chase on track with a combination of calculated batting and aggressive strokeplay. He found regular boundaries and ensured Australia remained within reach of the target despite wickets falling at the other end.
The match went down to the final over, with Australia needing 21 runs off Prasidh Krishna’s bowling. Maxwell took charge of the chase, striking a six followed by four consecutive boundaries across the final deliveries to seal a remarkable last-ball victory. He finished unbeaten on 104 off 48 balls, with eight fours and eight sixes, equalling the record for the fastest T20I century by an Australian at the time.
4. 113* vs India – 2019 (T20I)

Maxwell produced another memorable performance against India in Bengaluru in February 2019, guiding Australia to a series-clinching victory in the second T20I. Chasing 191, the visitors suffered an early setback after losing two wickets for just 22 runs.
With Australia under pressure, Maxwell took responsibility and turned the contest around with a magnificent unbeaten century. He combined patience with his trademark attacking approach, taking on India’s bowling attack and particularly making the most of the shorter boundaries at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The right-hander smashed seven fours and nine sixes during his 55-ball knock. His 113* helped Australia reach the target with two balls to spare, completing a 2-0 T20I series sweep on Indian soil. It was a defining performance that highlighted his ability to deliver against a quality bowling attack in difficult conditions.

5. 102 vs Sri Lanka – 2015 (ODI World Cup)

Maxwell announced his arrival as a destructive force in international cricket with a stunning century against Sri Lanka at the 2015 ODI World Cup in Sydney. Batting in the middle order, he shifted gears dramatically and took the Sri Lankan attack apart with his aggressive approach.
He brought up his maiden ODI century in just 51 deliveries, making it the fastest by an Australian batter at the time and the second-fastest in World Cup history. His innings was filled with powerful strokes and inventive shots that left the opposition struggling to contain him.
Maxwell eventually scored 102 off 53 balls, helping Australia post a massive total of 376/9. The hosts went on to win the match by 64 runs, strengthening their campaign on the way to lifting the World Cup trophy. The knock was an early glimpse of the fearless batting style that would become his trademark.
