Hashim Amla, a South African batsman, has retired from cricket at the age of 39. Between 2004 and 2019, he scored more than 18,000 international runs for South Africa, including a triple century in a Test match against England at The Kia Oval in 2012; Amla scored 18,672 international runs for the Proteas from 2004 to 2019, including 9,282 in 124 Test matches, second only to Jacques Kallis’ 13,206 runs for South Africa. The right-hander was a member of Surrey’s team that won the County Championship in 2022.

The right-hander still holds the record for the only South African to score a triple century in a Test match, scoring 311 not out against England in 2012 at The Kia Oval.

In one-day international cricket, where he scored 8,113 runs in 181 matches, no South African has scored more than his 27 hundreds.

Amla scored the final of his 57 first-class centuries against Northamptonshire in September, helping Surrey win the LV= Insurance County Championship.

Amla stated, I have fond memories of the Oval Ground, and the realization that I will no longer be a player leaves me with a profound sense of gratitude for what has been.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Alec Stewart, director of cricket, and the entire Surrey staff, players, and members for their assistance.

“Being a part of the Surrey ship is such an honor for any international player. It runs so professionally. I wish them success and numerous trophies.”

Stewart: Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, who recently took a leave of absence due to his wife’s ongoing cancer treatment, stated that Amla is a great player. Hashim’s retirement from the Surrey County Cricket Club will be bittersweet, but we are proud of his outstanding career. He will undoubtedly be remembered as a great player.

“Hashim is a wonderful person and a great cricket player. On and off the field, he has been a tremendous source of information for the team.

“He has shown his willingness to dig in and do what needs to be done to get his team a result in tough games, in addition to posting big scores at crucial times.

“I hold him up as an example to all young players of what it looks like to be a true professional,” she said.
