With just one match each to go for all teams, we are at the final frontier in the group stage of the Bangladesh Premier League 2022. Chattogram Challengers have had a topsy-turvy tournament and they should consider themselves fortunate that despite being so inconsistent, they are still in the hunt to finish in the top four. However, with Khulna Tigers breathing right down their neck, even a win might not be enough for the Challengers to get into the next round.
As it currently stands on the points table, Chattogram Challengers are placed at the fourth spot with four wins from nine matches and five losses. They have a net run rate of -0.172, which they would really want to get that better as Khulna Titans will be playing the last group game and will know the exact scenario needed to fulfill to get into the next round.
With two consecutive losses not so long ago, Chattogram Challengers were looking down and out, but with a recent win over Dhaka Minister Group brought them back into the contention. Batting first on a decent surface, the familiar top-order problems were on display once again for the Challengers as they managed to put just 148 runs on the board. Their bowlers, however, were fantastic throughout the second innings as they not only kept things tight but also kept picking up wickets at regular intervals.
On paper, the Challengers have a decent side but they haven’t really managed to utilize the firepower they have. With a win imperative for qualification in this upcoming match, they will need to bring out their A-game against Sylhet Sunrisers. If they can play to their potential, they will be a very difficult side to beat.
SYLHET SUNRISERS
Sylhet Sunrisers have undoubtedly been the worst-performing side in the competition so far and the fact that they are the only side that no longer have a stand to qualify for the next round speaks volumes about how poorly they have played. They have been so poor that even a win here will keep them stuck at the bottom of the ladder.
In the tournament up until now, the Sunrisers have won just one match from a total of nine played. Apart from that, they have a terrible net run rate of -0.713, which is the worst among all sides in the competition. They would want to end their tournament on a high here and nothing less than a win would do.
It’s been seven matches since the Sunrisers won their last match and their campaign has actually gone from bad to worse as the tournament has progressed. They are coming off a four-wicket defeat at the hands of Comilla Victorians on a surface that had something for everyone.
Most of the defeats that the Sunrisers have faced have been close defeats and they will be disappointed with their execution. On paper, the Sunrisers have a decent unit but executing well in high-pressure situations is where they have lacked. They would want to do that in the upcoming match and earn a compensation win. If they are able to play to their potential, they will certainly be in business.
