In the CPL 2022 championship match against the Barbados Royals in Guyana, Brandon King hit 83 not out off 50 balls as Jamaica Tallawahs chased down a 162-run mark with 23 balls and eight wickets remaining.

Players and staff from the Jamaica Tallawahs celebrate with the trophy after they won the CPL 2022 on Saturday in Guyana.

At Providence Stadium in Guyana on Saturday (Friday night), Jamaica Tallawahs defeated Barbados Royals by eight wickets in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2022) championship game. Jamaica won the CPL title three times, in 2013, 2016, and again in 2018.

With 13 fours and two sixes in his 50-ball 83 not out to help Tallawahs reach their 162 run goal with 23 balls remaining, Brandon King stole the show.

After choosing to bat first after winning the toss, the Royals achieved 161/7 with Pakistan’s Azam Khan scoring a 40-ball 51 in a Barbados innings in which the top-order laid a solid platform for a high total but the other batsmen were unable to build on it.

In the powerplay, the two openers Rakheem Cornwall (36 runs off 21 balls) and Kyle Myers (21 off 19) added 63 runs, but the pair quickly left the field afterward, leaving Barbados in trouble.

Khan kept the final scoreboard going for the winners, but he did not have much help from the Barbados finishers, who did not participate in the most crucial game of the Caribbean season.

Barbados’ batting collapse was brought on by Fabian Allen (3/24) and Nicholas Gordon (3/33) and was impossible for their bowlers to match while defending a difficult total.

Myers did give Royals a good start by dismissing Kemar Lewis for a duck in the first over of the second innings, but after that it was all Tallawahs as King and Shamarh Brooks put up 86 runs for the second wicket (47 off 33).

Although King was already set up at the other end when Brooks was out early in the 11th over to Jason Holder, the Royals’ window of opportunity to win came late. Rovman Powell acted as King’s silent partner and effectively grabbed control of the pursuit with a 13-ball 14*.

Player of the Series for CPL 2022

Because of his outstanding efforts throughout the season, Brandon King was named player of the series. He finished the competition with the most runs scored, with 422 runs in the CPL 2022 at a 38.36 average thanks to a century and two half-centuries. His striking rate was 135.25.

King claimed that he set two goals for himself before the competition and that he accomplished both of them after receiving the award. He remarked how happy he was about it.

“I obviously had objectives before the competition. One was that it was incredible for Brandon Kings to win the trophy and then finish as the player with the most runs scored as well, he remarked after receiving the Man of the Series award.

King has previously finished the competition with the most runs scored. He accomplished the feat again in 2019 while competing for the Guyana Amazon Warriors. King claimed that while both events were noteworthy, winning the championship in 2022 made them much more so.

“I’m content with both (the 2019 and 2022 seasons), but I’m happier with this one because we won the title. Simply said, put in the effort, have confidence in your abilities, and support yourself. The group is fantastic. Everyone has faith in one another. Through the highs and lows, we remained a unit, said Brandon King.
