As the IPL 2024 auction looms closer, franchises are fervently strategizing to bolster their coffers. The release and repurchase gambit emerges as a key maneuver, albeit one laden with risks. The recent closure of the retention and release window witnessed a flurry of notable names hitting the released players’ roster. Among these, the absence of the dynamic Ben Stokes, a confirmed absentee due to workload and injury management, amplifies the intrigue surrounding the forthcoming auction.

Stokes’ inclusion on the released list was an expected yet significant move, marking a departure from the on-field exploits that have often defined IPL seasons. The tactic of shedding high-value players to free up resources for the auction table demands a delicate balance, presenting both opportunities and pitfalls for franchises. The allure of reshuffling squads and acquiring talent afresh pervades the pre-auction milieu, as teams seek to optimize their squad compositions within the financial constraints.

Ben Stokes (CSK/16.25 Cr)

A Pricey gamble that didn’t pay off

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a significant splash by securing the services of English all-rounder Ben Stokes for a hefty sum of over 16 crore rupees. Anticipation was high, but the returns were meager: just 15 runs across two matches and an over that went for 18 runs. Unfortunately, Stokes, lauded for his skills, didn’t deliver as expected, prompting discussions about the value of such a sizable investment. His injury-prone history only added to the concerns, ultimately leading to CSK releasing him.

Harry Brook (SRH/13.25 Cr)

Struggling to match expectations

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) placed their bets on Harry Brook, eyeing a promising addition to their squad. However, Brook’s debut season failed to match the expectations set by his considerable price tag of 13.25 crore rupees. While he showcased flashes of talent with a notable century, his overall performance fell short. Struggling against spin and concluding the season with an average of 21.11 and a strike rate of 123.38, Brook’s contributions didn’t align with the significant investment SRH had made.

Shardul Thakur (KKR/10.75 Cr)

Struggles of a seasoned campaigner

Shardul Thakur, with an illustrious history in the IPL, faced a challenging stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2023. A player known for his impactful performances, Thakur’s contributions were limited, scoring just 113 runs in 11 innings and managing only seven wickets with the ball. His lackluster form failed to inspire KKR to playoffs glory, leaving them languishing in the lower echelons of the points table.

Wanindu Hasaranga (RCB/10.75 Cr)

A Mixed bag of potential and setbacks

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made a strong bid for Wanindu Hasaranga, banking on his spin prowess. Despite his hattrick heroics in the T20 World Cup, injuries and inconsistent performances hampered his impact in the IPL. While his potential was evident, Hasaranga’s struggles to maintain economic spells at crucial junctures contributed to RCB’s decision against retaining him.

Harshal Patel (RCB/10.75 Cr)

A Tale of contrasting fortunes

The return of Harshal Patel to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after an impressive season elsewhere raised hopes among the franchise faithful. Known for his prowess with the ball, Patel, nicknamed “Purple Patel,” clinched the Purple Cap in the 2021 IPL. However, his fortunes reversed in the 2023 edition as his economy rate soared close to 10, a far cry from his previous impactful performances.
