Catches win matches. “In the air, Sreesanth takes it. India win” – Remember Ravi Shastri screaming in the commentary box at the Wanderers in Johannesburg when Misbah-ul-Haq’s scoop went straight into the hands of S Sreesanth at short fine-leg? Well, that ‘high-pressure’ catch made India the inaugural T20 World Cup champions, defeating Pakistan in the final.

“When life gives you an opportunity, grab it with both hands.” This is exactly what fielders do. Fitness, strong presence of mind, timing, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are some of the skills that a great fielder should possess. We have witnessed many breathtaking catches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 that were crucial to the team’s victory.

Here are the five best catches of IPL 2024:

5. Anuj Rawat (RCB vs PBKS) – 7/10

This catch was one of the finest efforts one will ever see from a wicketkeeper. A well-paced bouncer bowled by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Yash Dayal took a top edge off the bat of Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) Sam Curran as he tried to hook the ball. The ball seemed to be going over Anuj Rawat, but the keeper-batter timed his jump perfectly to deny the boundary and give the team a breakthrough.

Athletic Anuj!

4. Ravindra Jadeja (CSK vs LSG) – 7.5/10

“What a catch! Is that the catch of IPL? Wow, that was flying like a trace of bullet!,” Ravi Shastri went berserk on-air after seeing Ravindra Jadeja take a blinder to dismiss KL Rahul. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper executed the cut short to perfection off Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Matheesha Pathirana’s waist-length delivery. The ball was destined to reach the boundary, but the superman Jadeja flew towards his right and completed a stunner with his left hand.

3. Ravi Bishnoi (LSG vs GT) – 8/10

LSG spinner Ravi Bishnoi took a one-handed screamer to dismiss Gujarat Titans (GT) batter Kane Williamson off his own bowling. The leg-spinner bowled a fuller and Williamson chipped it in the air. Bishnoi flew to his right and managed to hold on to the ball. The Kiwi batter was stunned by the 23-year-old’s reflexes and presence of mind.

2. Ramandeep Singh (KKR vs LSG) – 8.5/10

LSG opener Arshin Kulkarni got a leading edge as he looked to flick a full-length delivery from Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) pacer Mitchell Starc. The ball went up in the air towards the covers and Ramandeep Singh and Andre Russell went for it.

Ramandeep had to leap back and cover good ground before putting in a full-body dive to complete a spectacular catch with both hands. Russell was in awe of his teammate’s incredible effort, as were the commentary panelists. Notably, the 27-year-old bagged the ‘Catch of the Season’ award.

1. Faf du Plessis (RCB vs CSK) – 9/10

39-year-old Faf du Plessis took a one-handed stunner to dismiss Mitchell Santner in the match between RCB and CSK. It is not just his incredible effort that puts this catch at the top of the list, but also considering the circumstances of the game. RCB had an uphill task of restricting CSK to 200 to qualify for the playoffs and Santner’s catch during the 15th over proved vital as a drop could have resulted in a boundary.

The southpaw hit a low full toss towards the RCB skipper at mid-off. The ball seemed to go over Du Plessis’ head, but the South African jumped in time to his full height to grab the ball. It was a turning point in the match and eventually helped RCB win the game and qualify for the knockouts.
