The WPL 2024 auction recently happened in Mumbai on December 9. There were 30 spots to be filled and some of the players got eye-watering bids. At the WPL 2024 auction, 165 players went under the hammer.

With five franchises (Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz) vying for 30 players, competition for each player was fierce. Many players were left out due to squad composition, money, and a shortage of cash.

In this article, we take a look at –

Here are the top 5 overseas players who were unsold in the 2024 WPL auction:

5. Amy Jones

Veteran England keeper-batter Amy Jones had kept her base price at INR 40 lakhs. Amy Jones has scored 1380 T20I runs at an average and a strike rate of 21.77 and 122.28, respectively, and has been sharp behind the stumps. Despite this amazing record with the bat and keeping abilities, Jones failed to find a buyer as all franchises had other quality keepers and backups.

4. Amanda-Jade Wellington

New Zealand all-rounder Amanda-Jade Wellington has a relatively new international career with 28 wickets in 22 white-ball matches. But she has been very active in the T20 circuit. She has been brilliant with the ball in WBBL 2023 as she picked 23 wickets from 15 innings at an impressive economy of 5.46, averaging 11.65 with the ball. But she couldn’t manage to find a buyer in the WPL 2024 auction.

3. Lea Tahuhu

Lea Tahuhu of New Zealand is by far the fastest pacer in Women’s cricket and a huge attraction wherever she plays cricket. Her record is also very impressive with 78 wickets in 80 T20Is with a best of 4/6 at an economy of 6.02. She had played in the Women’s T20 league, but in WPL 2024, Tahuhu failed to get a bid for herself.

2. Deandra Dottin

The first Women’s cricketer to score a century in T20Is, Deandra Dottin is by far one of the best players produced by West Indies. Hailing from Barbados, she played 127 WT20Is, scoring 2697 runs with two centuries and 12 fifties. She also picked 62 wickets with a best of 5/5 with her medium-pace bowling.

Dottin was controversially excluded from Gujarat Giants’ squad in WPL 2023 on medical grounds, something she denied publicly. However, in the WPL 2024 auction, Dottin failed to find a buyer as her base price was the highest at INR 50 lakhs.

1. Chamari Athapaththu

Sri Lankan legend Chamari Athapaththu was touted as one of the best players in the WPL 2024 auction. However, despite a base price of INR 30 lakhs, she went unsold for the second year running. She has had a dream year, almost single-handedly winning the first-ever historic ODI series against New Zealand, and scored 415 ODI runs at an average of 69.16 while striking at 125.37 in 2023.

She also led Sri Lanka to a T20I series win over England with 114 runs at a strike rate of 165.21. Playing for Sydney Thunder in recently concluded WBBL, she earned the Player of the Tournament award in the 2023 season.
