After a productive debut stint with a London club, South Africa’s batter will return.
Pieter Malan, a top-order batsman for South Africa, has committed to play for Middlesex for the entire 2023 season as an international player.
The 33-year-old Malan participated in the Royal London Cup last summer and helped Middlesex win promotion from Division Two of the County Championship. After being brought in to replace Peter Handscomb, he amassed 200 runs in six red-ball innings, including 93 against Worcestershire on the road to secure Middlesex’s second-place finish and 394 at 65.66 in the 50-over competition.
Middlesex’s Director of men’s performance cricket Alan Coleman said, “We are delighted that Pieter will be returning to Middlesex for the 2023 season. He had a significant impact on the team during his stay there this summer, and we are eager for him to return to the home dressing room in 2019.
He not only contributes a great deal of expertise and experience, but he also has a strong sense of drive, passion, and determination to achieve. He puts a lot of effort into his game and is the perfect role model for our younger players to watch and emulate.
“Given the really difficult circumstances, the difficult surface, and the significance of the match situation, his innings of 93 against Worcestershire in our final game was the standout effort of the season for me. He hit the ground running this summer, establishing excellent form early and constantly making an impression at the crease.
“We are eager to have Pieter join the team again next year and can’t wait to welcome him back.”
Malan has prior experience in Division One with Warwickshire, for whom he played six matches and averaged 37.66 in 2021. Malan played three Tests against England during their 2019–20 tour of South Africa.
Being part of the Championship promotion push at the end of the season was amazing, and I’m really thrilled to see the club continue their adventure in Division One next year, said Malan. “I’m delighted to be returning to Middlesex and Lord’s next season. I was made to feel so welcome from day one, which made the decision to return extremely easy.
