INDIA
India took the loss and the failure to qualify for the semi-final in the T20 World Cup 2021 quite seriously. Since then, the team has completely changed its approach and is now a team willing to take more risks, play more attacking cricket, and adopt modern T20 strategies.
A few questions remain around the playing eleven for India. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli seem set to play as the top-3 with SKY at number four all but certain. If you assume that Hardik Pandya is also a certainty in the playing eleven and Ravindra Jadeja will take the number 7 slot, then there is room for just one out of Dinesh Karthik or Rishab Pant.
Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, and Arshdeep Singh are the bowlers that we see making the playing eleven for the first match.
India has had a lot of success in T20 cricket since the previous T20 World Cup. It also has four wins in the previous five matches against Pakistan.
PAKISTAN
Pakistan suffered a massive blow to its chances when Shaheen Afridi was ruled out of the Asia Cup. Afridi was the one that tore through the Indian batting lineup when they played in the World Cup. Not having him will make the bowling a bit weaker, although Pakistan still has several superb options.
Babar Azam is the number one all-format batter in the world and we believe it is just a matter of time before the rankings reflect that. He is brilliant while chasing, remarkably consistent, and is the backbone of the Pakistani batting lineup.
Babar Azam is well supported by Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman at the top of the order. These three batters have scored almost 2/3rd of the runs for Pakistan since the previous World Cup. Pakistan does not often lose early wickets and one of its top-3 gets runs more often than not.
The middle order for Pakistan is also quite explosive. Asif Ali, Khushdil Shah, and Shadab Khan have all improved as batters. They all play the role of aggressive finishers in the PSL and will look to make an impact. We would not bet on the number of runs they score but you could bet on them to Hit A Six in this match.
Pakistan’s bowling attack will have Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Hasan Ali. We think they will pick one out of Mohammad Hasnain or Naseem Shah to bring in the ‘X’ factor with sheer pace.
