Ruturaj Gaikwad and Simarjeet Singh were instrumental in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) triumph over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a tightly contested match, clinching victory by five wickets in the low-scoring encounter of Match 61 in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday (May 12) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Riyan Parag’s exceptional batting for RR
Opting to bat first, Rajasthan got off to a steady start with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler laying a solid foundation. However, both fell victim to the impressive bowling of Simarjeet Singh, who claimed three crucial wickets for Chennai. Despite setbacks, skipper Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag steadied the ship with a resilient partnership. Parag’s unbeaten knock of 47 off 35 deliveries, along with valuable contributions from Dhruv Jurel, propelled Rajasthan to a competitive score of 141/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Simarjeet Singh’s bowling brilliance
Chennai’s bowling attack put up a disciplined performance, led by the likes of Simarjeet who grabbed three wickets including the likes of Buttler and Jaiswal while Tushar Deshpande, who picked up two wickets. Maheesh Theekshana and Shardul Thakur supported well, maintaining the pressure on the Rajasthan batters. Despite a late counter attack by Parag and Jurel, Chennai’s bowlers managed to restrict Rajasthan to a manageable total.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten knock
In response, CSK got off to a promising start with Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad setting the tone. Nevertheless, Rajasthan’s bowling unit fought back, claiming crucial wickets at regular intervals. Daryl Mitchell and Shivam Dube made valuable contributions, but it was Gaikwad’s unbeaten knock of 42 runs that anchored Chennai’s innings. With the match heading towards a thrilling climax, the tension mounted with each passing delivery.
Rajasthan Royals’ bowling effort
Rajasthan’s bowlers put up a spirited display, with Ravichandran Ashwin leading the charge. Ashwin’s off-spin proved to be particularly effective, claiming two key wickets. Yuzvendra Chahal and Trent Boult provided crucial breakthroughs, while Sandeep Sharma and Avesh Khan contained the run flow. Despite their best efforts, Chennai managed to reach the target of 141 runs, with Gaikwad steering them to safety.
