During the T20 World Cup 2024 clash between Australia and Oman, veteran Australian pacer Mitchell Starc was in action, delivering a challenging spell. Starc was in his fourth over, having bowled effectively throughout the game. However, his spell was abruptly cut short when he managed just one delivery in the 15th over, which was a wide.

Injury forces Mitchell Starc off the field

Immediately after delivering the wide ball, Starc was seen in visible discomfort. The team’s physiotherapists rushed onto the field to provide treatment. Despite the on-field attention, Starc could not continue and was substituted by Cameron Green. Glenn Maxwell stepped in to complete the over, taking over the bowling responsibilities.

Mitchell Marsh provides update on Starc

After the game, Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh addressed Starc’s condition during the presentation ceremony. Marsh reassured fans and teammates, stating, “Starcy was just a cramp so didn’t want to take a chance. When Starcy says I am okay to go off, you let him go off.” This update suggested that Starc’s injury is not severe, and his exit was precautionary to prevent further damage.

Australia secures comfortable win

Despite the setback of losing Starc mid-over, Australia secured a comfortable 39-run victory over Oman. However, the scoreline does not fully reflect the tense moments throughout the match. After being sent in to bat, Australia faced a challenging period, especially in the ninth over when Mehran Khan was on a hat-trick, having dismissed Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell consecutively.

The turning point came with a crucial 102-run partnership between Marcus Stoinis and David Warner, which stabilized Australia’s innings. Their bowlers then effectively contained Oman’s batters to ensure the win.

Reflecting on the match, Marsh said, “Close game. Good to get the win. It’s not going to be the 200 types in this tournament. We are kind of going to the old T20 style here in this tournament.”
