Long-standing rivals Australia and England went head-to-head in the 17th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday. The intense battle took place at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, where Australia triumphed over England with a 36-run victory. The game was packed with thrilling moments and standout performances that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Tense moment between Matthew Wade and umpire Nitin Menon

One incident that drew significant attention involved Australian player Matthew Wade and on-field umpire Nitin Menon. This altercation occurred in the 18th over of Australia’s innings while Wade was set to face England’s Adil Rashid.

As Rashid bowled, Wade seemed unprepared but still managed to defend the ball back to the bowler upon realizing the delivery. According to cricket rules, the ball could have been called dead if Wade had not played a shot.

Umpire Menon addressed this by questioning Wade’s appeal for a dead ball, asking, “For what?” Wade, unhappy with Menon’s tone, moved towards him aggressively. In response, Menon gestured for Wade to back off, leading to a dramatic and memorable confrontation.

Mitchell Marsh lauds team’s comprehensive performance

Australia’s captain, Mitchell Marsh, expressed immense satisfaction with his team’s comprehensive performance in their victory over England, highlighting the overall excellence of their game. He praised the significant improvement from their previous match, noting the effective start and the exceptional contributions of the bowlers, particularly Pat Cummins, who excelled under challenging windy conditions. Marsh emphasized the importance of learning from such conditions and continuously improving as they progress through the tournament.

“Very pleased with that effort, our all-round game is outstanding, it was a great game. The way we started, we learned a lot of lessons from the first game and the boys turned up really well today. The bowlers did their thing so well, we are an experienced team. Patty was outstanding. It was a tough end to bowl, wind was coming in. We need to keep learning from these conditions, keep improving and keep progressing through the tournament,” said Marsh at the post-match presentation.
