Australia began their tour of Zimbabwe 2026 with a convincing 59-run victory over the hosts in the opening match at Harare Sports Club. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Australia posted 294/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Zimbabwe showed moments of resistance during the chase, particularly through Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza, but Nathan Ellis’ excellent spell eventually broke their hopes as they were bowled out for 235 in 45.1 overs.

Matt Renshaw anchors Australia to competitive total

Australia made a brisk start after being asked to set the target, with Mitchell Marsh contributing 36 off 28 balls, including six fours and a six. However, Travis Head and Josh Inglis struggled to make an impact, scoring four runs each, while Alex Carey made 27 from 53 balls.

Cooper Connolly provided an important contribution in the middle order, scoring 51 off 46 balls. His innings included four fours and three sixes and helped Australia maintain momentum after losing wickets at regular intervals.

The standout performance came from Matt Renshaw, who produced an excellent unbeaten-style middle-order effort to score 109 runs from 94 deliveries. His century featured seven fours and three sixes and proved to be the foundation of Australia’s total. Renshaw received useful support from Ollie Peake, who added 30 off 40 balls, as Australia finished on 294/8 after 50 overs.

Zimbabwe’s Newman Nyamhuri was the pick of the bowlers despite conceding 62 runs in his nine overs. He claimed five wickets, while Brad Evans took two wickets. Sikandar Raza also picked up one wicket for the hosts.

Zimbabwe fight back before Nathan Ellis takes control

Zimbabwe’s chase suffered an early setback when Ben Curran was dismissed for a duck, but Brian Bennett and Innocent Kaia attempted to rebuild the innings. Bennett scored 25 from 32 balls, while Kaia added 18 from 19. Ervine then produced the innings’ most substantial contribution for Zimbabwe. The experienced batter scored 59 from 60 deliveries, striking six fours and one six. Raza also kept the chase alive with a patient 57 off 76 balls, hitting five fours.

However, Zimbabwe struggled to maintain the required scoring rate as Australia continued to take wickets. Wesley Madhevere scored 22, while Brad Evans contributed 18, but the lower order could not provide enough support to take the hosts closer to the target.

Ellis was Australia’s chief destroyer with the ball. The pacer delivered a superb spell of 9.1 overs, conceding only 31 runs while claiming five wickets. His performance dismantled Zimbabwe’s lower order and ensured Australia remained firmly in control. Spencer Johnson, Xavier Bartlett, Renshaw, Adam Zampa and Connolly each claimed one wicket, while Zimbabwe were eventually dismissed for 235 in 45.1 overs.
