Brendon McCullum is regarded as one of the most successful players to have represented New Zealand in the international circuit. He still holds some of the most brilliant records in international cricket to his credit. He is still remembered as one of the finest entertainers that the game has seen till now.

On this day (February 20) in 2016, Brendon McCullum struck the fastest century in Test cricket, surpassing yesteryear legend Sir Vivian Richards of the West Indies.

Australia were touring New Zealand for a two-match Test series, which saw Australia dominate throughout the entire series and cause a whitewash. But from New Zealand’s perspective, the only major highlight was the world-record which the then 34-year-old McCullum broke, and it stays evergreen in history books even to this day.

Known for being an “impatient batter”, because of his ability to score quick runs in the least amount of deliveries, the second Test saw McCullum come into the game with his usual attacking mindset. After the dismissal of Corey Anderson for a gritty 72, McCullum took centre-stage to play an innings of a lifetime. For once it appeared that he was playing a T20I and not a Test match.

Such were the range of shots produced by McCullum, with so utter precision and speed, that it took him just 54 deliveries to reach the triple-digit figure, bettering the record (56-ball hundred) previously owned by Richards and Misbah by two balls. His knock featured 21 boundaries and six sixes.

Though Australia went on to win the Test match, yet McCullum was lauded for his innings by players and pundits worldwide and it was an emotional end to a remarkable career as well, as he on a personal note managed to end his international career on a high by adding another glorious feather to his illustrious cap.
