On December 04, 2021, New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel became the third player in the history of Test cricket to take all ten wickets in an innings. Patel achieved the feat on Day 2 of the 2nd Test between India vs New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The left-arm spinner got the first success for his side as he dismissed Shubman Gill to break the opening stand of 80 runs. Patel further brought India in all sorts of trouble as he got big scalps of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli in the very next over to leave India on 80/3.

The left-arm spinner further returned to end another 80-run stand between Mayank Agarwal and Shreyas Iyer to bring India on 160/4. New Zealand picked four wickets on Day 1 as India finished on 221/4 with all four wickets falling against Ajaz Patel.

Patel began Day 2 on a positive note as he added two more wickets to his tally to complete his five-wicket haul. He further dismissed the well-set Mayank Agarwal (150 off 311) and marched closer towards the historic feat. The Maharashtra-born cricketer finally etched his name in record books as Mohammaed Siraj skied one in the 110th over of the innings which was comfortably taken by Rachin Ravindra.

As a result, Patel finished with figures of 10/119 in 47.5 overs and became just the third player in history to claim all ten wickets in a Test innings after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble. He further picked up 4/106 in the second innings to finish with figures of 14/225 in the match. Notably, it was also the second-best bowling figures by a Kiwi bowler in Tests after Sir Richard Hadlee (15/123).

However, despite his marvellous bowling spell, Patel couldn’t save his team from a loss as New Zealand lost the match by 372 runs and lost the series by 0-1.
