Luka Modric’s contract with Real Madrid was extended on Monday, retaining the seasoned midfielder for one additional year. Similar to what it accomplished with Toni Kroos this past week, Madrid decided to extend the current deal for the 37-year-old Croatian player to the end of the 2023–24 season.

With the recent addition of 19-year-old Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund, Madrid is able to keep two of its most seasoned players in the midfield. In the midfield for the Spanish team are Dani Ceballos, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Federico Valverde. Ceballos’ contract was recently extended as well.

The upcoming campaign will mark Modric’s 12th with Madrid. With the team, he has played 488 times and won 23 championships, namely five Champions Leagues as well as three Spanish leagues. He was named the best player of the Year in 2018 by FIFA and the Ballon d’Or.

With Madrid, Kroos, 33, will start his tenth season. Additionally, the team recently extended the deal of centre-back Nacho Fernández, and it enhanced its offensive capabilities by borrowing Spain striker Joselu on loan from Espanyol. The forwards Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Eden Hazard, as well as Mariano Diaz will not be back for the upcoming season as they have either been sold or their contracts have run out.

Mbappe to Madrid on the cards?

If Mbappe moves to Madrid, Rodrygo thinks his role in the squad would be severely reduced. The Brazilian has given the potential scenario great thought and has asked the club for permission to engage in negotiations with other clubs.

Mbappe, one of the best attackers in the world, is set to arrive soon, which might alter the starting eleven and push Rodrygo to the bench. The focus is still on Madrid and what would happen if they were to sign the French forward as negotiations over Mbappe’s transfer proceed.

Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Madrid, must now strike a difficult balance. Although the possibility of acquiring Mbappe is definitely alluring, they must carefully analyse its effects on the dynamics of the squad and the future of bright prospects like Rodrygo.
