Villarreal defeated Real Madrid 3-2 on Saturday in La Liga on a frantic night at the Bernabeu thanks to two goals scored in the final 20 minutes. The drama didn’t end there, either, as Federico Valverde and Baena, who had argued during the game, also got into a fight in the parking lot following the conclusion of play.
According to reports, the Uruguayan international promised his opponent he would face him after the game, and it appears he kept his word by hitting the Spain Under-21 player in the stadium’s parking lot for the team buses. Later photos of Baena showed him to have a facial bruising and swelling cheekbone.
According to reports in Spain, Villarreal has video of the alleged event, and police are aware of it. Baena insulted Valverde regarding his then-unborn baby during their confrontation during the Copa del Rey match in January, according to unnamed sources who spoke to The Athletic.
Baena also took part in an interview after the game and the incident took place last night and refused the claims made against him. He said, “Very happy with the impressive victory of the team on a stage like the Santiago Bernabeu, but at the same time very sad about the aggression I suffered after the match and surprised by what is being said about my person. It is totally false that I said that!”
Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the media after their dismantling loss to Villareal. He spoke about the fixture congestion that might have gotten to his squad which might have resulted in their loss. He said, “It’s hard to prepare for a match that comes in between two other matches that are much more important. I made a lot of rotations because the Barcelona game took a lot out of us physically and mentally.”
With one more game remaining, Real Madrid trails Barcelona in the current La Liga standings by 12 points. If the Blaugrana defeat Girona on Monday, April 10 at the Spotify Camp Nou, they might fall behind by 15 points.
