Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is poised to make his return to management, with reports confirming his agreement to take on the role of head coach at Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Arabian Pro League. After leaving his position as Aston Villa boss in November, Gerrard had been linked with various managerial vacancies in the Premier League and the Championship. However, it seems that the lure of a new adventure in the Arabian Gulf has enticed the former England international.
The Daily Mail reports that Gerrard has now finalized the terms of his deal with Al Ettifaq, making him one of the highest-paid managers in the world. The Saudi outfit had been pursuing Gerrard for several weeks and flew club executives to London to negotiate the agreement. An official announcement confirming his appointment is expected in the next 24 hours.
Al Ettifaq finished seventh in the 16-team Saudi Pro League division last season and are yet to make any marquee signings. However, the arrival of Gerrard could potentially attract big-name players to the club, as the allure of substantial wages and the opportunity to work under the esteemed Liverpool icon may prove tempting.
Interestingly, the Saudi Pro League is set to welcome several high-profile players next season, including N’Golo Kante, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema. Another familiar face Gerrard may encounter is that of Roberto Firmino, who is joining Al-Ahli on a three-year deal.
Gerrard’s coaching career has been marked by notable achievements. During his time at Scottish giants Rangers, he led the team to an unbeaten season and secured the club’s first league title in a decade. Despite being linked with managerial positions in England, Gerrard has decided to embrace the challenge of managing in Saudi Arabia.
In June, Gerrard had initially turned down the offer from Al Ettifaq, stating that he would not be taking it on. However, it appears that he has had a change of heart, possibly due to being overlooked for jobs in the Championship. Relegated Leicester City chose Enzo Maresca as their new boss, while Leeds are on the verge of appointing Daniel Farke.
As the football world eagerly awaits the official announcement, fans and pundits alike will be intrigued to see how Gerrard’s management skills translate to the Saudi Arabian Pro League and whether he can make a significant impact at Al Ettifaq.
