Raphael Varane, the Manchester United centre-back, has turned to social media to criticise the recently implemented Premier League rules. Varane expressed dissatisfaction with the FA’s schedule and bemoaned the fact that players are required to play in an excessive number of games.
The Frenchman acknowledged that he feels fortunate to be doing what he is, but he also said that the players’ preparation for games is not at its best due to the schedule.
Raphael Varane said that, “We had a meeting last week with the FA. They recommended from the referees new decisions and rules. From the managers and players, we have shared our concerns for many years now that there are too many games. The schedule is overcrowded, and it’s at a dangerous level for players physical and mental well-being.”
The 2018 World Cup winner added that, “Despite our previous feedbacks, they have now recommended for next season: longer games, more intensity, and less emotions to be shown by players. We just want to be in good condition on the pitch to give 100% to our club and fans. Why are our opinions not being heard?”
The Manchester United defender continued that, “As a player, I feel very privileged to do the job I love every day, but I feel these changes are damaging our game. We want to be at our maximum level, the best we can be and put on amazing performances for fans to celebrate every week.”
The French International ended his statement by saying that, “I believe it is important that we, players and managers, highlight these important issues as we want to protect the game we love and give the fans our best.”
The 2023–24 Premier League season for Manchester United will begin on August 14 at Old Trafford against Wolverhampton Wanderers. In Erik ten Hag’s inaugural season as coach, the Red Devils came third in the league. They’ll be eager to build on that success this season and make a comeback in the UEFA Champions League.
