Ben Stokes apologizes to teammates following nightclub controversy

England captain Ben Stokes has opened up for the first time since returning to the Test side, admitting that one of his first responsibilities after rejoining the squad was to apologise to his teammates following the nightclub controversy that forced him to miss the previous Test against New Zealand. With England preparing for the series-deciding third Test at Trent Bridge, Stokes said accepting accountability was essential before turning his full attention to leading the team once again.

The all-rounder had missed the second Test after breaching team curfew during a nightclub incident, an episode that overshadowed England’s preparations and placed additional pressure on an inexperienced side led by former captain Joe Root. England went on to suffer a heavy 253-run defeat in Stokes’ absence, increasing scrutiny on both the players and the team’s leadership. Now back in charge, Stokes insisted the focus has shifted entirely towards helping England bounce back and clinch the series.

Reflecting on the incident, Stokes acknowledged that the consequences extended well beyond himself. He said the episode affected the entire squad, coaching staff, and even players making their Test debuts, whose special moment was overshadowed by events away from the field. The England skipper revealed that apologising to the dressing room was among the first things he did upon his return, stressing that leadership is about accepting responsibility during difficult moments as much as enjoying success.

Stokes explained that he felt it was important to look everyone impacted by the situation in the eye and apologise personally. According to him, true leadership requires owning mistakes rather than ignoring them, and he believed addressing the issue openly was the right step before moving forward.

“Of course [I apologised]. That was one of the first things I had to do as a captain. You look at the situation and it affects more than just myself. It affected Joe Root, the squad, the people outside the playing environment. It no doubt had an effect on lads who were making their debut. That should have been all about them. Unfortunately a situation outside of their control took precedence over their big days, making their debut for England in Test cricket. It would be stupid and naive of me not to acknowledge and address that,” said Stokes as quoted by cricbuzz.

He also told the squad that his complete focus is now on the final Test, adding that while England cannot change what happened in the previous match, they can control how they respond in the decisive contest. Stokes said both he and the players understand the importance of the challenge ahead and are determined to deliver the result the team needs.

“It’s all well, everything being fine and dandy when it’s all going well, but you need to take responsibility for things. You need to be big enough and man enough to take that upon your shoulders, and look everyone who it has affected in the eye and apologise the way you need to apologise. That is something that I did. Yesterday, the important thing for me as captain of the team was making sure that I was letting the lads know that I am back properly as the captain of this team. I did need to obviously say a few things and acknowledge a few things to the team, and the team only, and I feel like I voiced those quite well to everyone. Yes, we didn’t get the result we wanted last week, but we can’t change that. What we can effect and decide on is how we go about this week. We’re desperate to get the results, I’m desperate to be the result. I think I’ve made a pretty good effort at making sure that the most important people know that, which is the team,” added Stokes.

Joe Root’s support and the impact of the controversy

Stokes also spoke about the criticism directed at Root, who stepped in as captain during his absence. Root led a relatively inexperienced England side but came under fire after the team’s comprehensive defeat. The all-rounder admitted it was painful to watch his close friend receive criticism, especially because Root had accepted the responsibility without hesitation despite no longer being England’s full-time Test captain.

“As his friend, it was hard to see the reaction that he got, and for me, that’s something that hurt me because I’m very close with Joe. As I said, when something happens, it is obviously going to affect someone else, and seeing the effect that it had on Joe from public opinion was hard to see and read from my point of view, if that makes sense,” explained Stokes.

Stokes praised Root’s commitment to the team, saying it would have been easy for him to decline the role, yet he once again put England first. He added that watching the defeat from the sidelines was difficult, but seeing the public reaction towards Root hurt him even more on a personal level.

“That shouldn’t take away the courage that Joe showed in taking that on that week. It would have been very, very easy for him to have said, ‘Nah, I don’t need this.’ But yet again, he put the team first as he’s done on multiple occasions. It was tough to watch from a few different angles, watching the guys lose and go through the emotions of losing the Test match. It’s never nice because I know what that feels like, losing. But then seeing some of the reaction that Joe undeservedly got was something that hurts you, not only as a colleague but as a friend,” the Chirstchurch-born added.
