England‘s search for a new Test head coach continues to gather pace, with several high-profile names being linked to the role following Brendon McCullum‘s departure. While the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is still evaluating its options, former Australia cricketer Darren Lehmann has publicly backed one candidate, saying he would be an excellent fit to guide England’s red-ball side into its next chapter.

England weighing multiple options after Brendon McCullum’s exit

The ECB is currently assessing potential replacements after England endured a disappointing run in Test cricket, capped by a 4-1 Ashes series defeat in Australia. The coaching vacancy has sparked widespread discussion, with former Australia coach Justin Langer, ex-Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming, and former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff all emerging as serious contenders.

Andy Flower, another experienced coach with a successful international record, has reportedly ruled himself out of the race, narrowing the list of possible candidates.

Time is also becoming a significant factor for the ECB. With England’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan approaching quickly, the board may have to appoint an interim coach if a permanent successor cannot be finalised in time. Former England opener Marcus Trescothick has emerged as a strong candidate to take charge on a temporary basis should the recruitment process extend further.

Darren Lehmann names ideal candidate to become England’s next Test coach

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lehmann shared his thoughts on England’s coaching search while also clarifying that he has not been approached for the position despite his ongoing coaching work in county cricket.

“I’m very happy coaching Northants and I haven’t had any phone calls. You’d certainly listen to it. I’m sure there’s so many applicants. My feeling is they’ve already made up their mind. If you remove someone mid-summer, you’ve got somebody in mind,” Lehmann said.

Although Lehmann admitted he has no inside information regarding the ECB’s plans, he suggested that the timing of McCullum’s exit indicates the board likely has a preferred candidate already identified. Lehmann reserved special praise for Langer, highlighting the former Australia coach’s experience and leadership qualities.

“If he (Langer) were to go for it, he’d be a really good coach. Whoever takes it on, they’ve got some really talented players, I see some good players in the county system,” he added.

Notably, Langer is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished modern coaches. He played a key role in rebuilding Australia’s Test side following the 2018 ball-tampering scandal and guided the team to the 2021 T20 World Cup title before stepping down from the role.
