Joe Root reacts to question on possible alcohol ban after Ben Stokes' nightclub controversy before the second Test

The narrative surrounding the high-stakes England vs New Zealand series has taken a dramatic turn away from the boundary ropes. As both teams gear up for the crucial 2nd Test at London, the conversation dominating the buildup to this ENG vs NZ clash on Jun 17, 2026 is centered entirely on team discipline, curfews, and off-field conduct.

With regular skipper Ben Stokes unavailable after a high-profile nightclub incident, veteran batter Joe Root has stepped back into the leadership spotlight. Root faces the immediate task of steadying a ship rocked by intense media scrutiny on the eve of the Oval Test match.

The captaincy transition comes under incredibly difficult circumstances. Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were left out of the England squad following a breach of the team’s midnight curfew during celebrations after their opening Test victory at Lord’s. The situation grew more complicated with an ongoing investigation into a late-night confrontation where Atkinson was reportedly targeted by a rugby academy player.

Faced with a barrage of questions regarding player behaviour and team culture, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, Robert Key, indicated that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) might look into stricter measures, including a total alcohol ban.

However, speaking at the pre-match press conference, Root explicitly dismissed the idea that the squad suffers from a systemic drinking problem. He firmly argued against a total prohibition on alcohol, noting that isolated mistakes should not dictate blanket policies.

I don’t necessarily think that’s the way to go, I don’t think there’s a drinking culture within our team. I think, as I said, there have been occasions where we’ve let ourselves down, and we’ve got things wrong. We have to accept that and move forward from that and learn from that,” Root told reporters.

Root emphasized that celebrating collective milestones remains an essential part of the team’s bonding process. “When you work towards something for a long time, there should be opportunities and chances where you can celebrate that and enjoy that with the team,” he added, highlighting that many of his fondest career memories were forged in post-victory dressing rooms.

Navigating responsibility and the shadows of the past

The current media storm is intensified by recent history. The midnight curfew itself was originally brought in following an Ashes tour marred by instances of excessive drinking and casino visits. Furthermore, white-ball captain Harry Brook was recently involved in a separate altercation with a bouncer during the tour of New Zealand, making the latest incident a repetitive headache for ECB administrators.

Root, who is currently within realistic striking distance of rewriting several of Sachin Tendulkar‘s historic Test records, noted that maintaining a balance comes down to personal accountability and situational awareness. He stated that players simply need to be smarter about when and where they choose to unwind. “You’ve got to pick the right times and the right places, and I think that’s the important thing,” the 35-year-old remarked.

Stepping back into the captaincy role brings its own emotional weight for Root. Having previously resigned from the position in 2022 following a difficult Ashes campaign, he reflected openly on how consuming the leadership role can be.

I found I ended up being so consumed with everything. I wasn’t the person I wanted to be, and it was the right time to step away. It was a great opportunity for a fresh start for English cricket and was absolutely the right decision,” Root admitted on Tuesday.

Now, with a heavily altered playing XI featuring multiple debutants, Root is tasked with blocking out the off-field noise to ensure England keeps its focus entirely on the cricket.
