Chris Lynn was handed a suspension following the T20 Blast

Former Australian batter Chris Lynn has come under the spotlight after England’s Cricket Regulator released details of a disciplinary case involving the Australian cricketer. The 36-year-old was representing Northamptonshire in the 2026 T20 Blast and featured during the tournament’s Finals Day in July. The announcement was made public on November 6, with Lynn accepting the sanction imposed by the regulator. However, the period of suspension had already been completed before the details of the case were released.

Why was Chris Lynn suspended after the T20 Blast?

Lynn was part of the Northamptonshire side that won the 2026 T20 Blast title after defeating Hampshire in the final at Edgbaston on July 18. He scored four runs in the title clash, following which his urine sample was sent to a WADA-accredited laboratory in France for analysis as part of the anti-doping procedure.

The sample returned an adverse analytical finding for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. The Cricket Regulator notified Lynn of the result on July 31 and provisionally suspended him. On August 20, the bTTER responded to the charge and confirmed that he had consumed cocaine during the evening of July 15 and the early hours of July 16.

However, Lynn maintained that he had used it outside competition and that it was unrelated to his sporting performance. The regulator accepted his explanation after he provided supporting evidence. One of the two initial charges under the ECB’s anti-doping rules was subsequently dropped because the cocaine level in his sample was below the minimum threshold required for a charge under WADA regulations.

Lynn’s suspension reduced after completing treatment programme

The Cricket Regulator initially proposed a three-month suspension for Lynn. However, the punishment was reduced to one month after the batter confirmed that he had completed a substance of abuse treatment programme. His suspension was backdated to July 31, when his provisional ban began, and was deemed to have been completed on August 30.

Lynn has therefore already served the entire suspension and is not currently banned from playing cricket. The Australian batter has not featured in professional cricket since the start of the suspension. He is also reportedly close to joining the Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming Big Bash League season, although an official confirmation of the deal is still awaited.
