Fans erupt as Shubman Gill and Manav Suthar power India to a historic win against Afghanistan in the one-off Test

Indian cricket fans exploded with joy at the PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, as India secured a commanding victory over Afghanistan in the Only Test on June 8, 2026. Demonstrating relentless dominance from the very first ball, the hosts wrapped up an emphatic win by an innings and 300 runs.

The match proved to be a masterclass in modern Test cricket, seamlessly blending aggressive batting with highly disciplined spin bowling. Led efficiently by Shubman Gill, Team India controlled the narrative across all three days, leaving the visiting Afghan side with few answers in challenging conditions.

Shubman Gill and India batters put on a massive score against Afghanistan

Winning the toss and electing to bat, India’s batting lineup put on an absolute clinic, piling up a mammoth total of 564/8 before declaring after 127 overs. Captain Gill led from the front with a spectacular, elegant knock of 126 runs off 177 balls, anchoring the innings with 15 fours and a well-timed six. Gill’s fluid strokeplay consistently frustrated the Afghan bowlers, setting a highly aggressive tone right from Day 1.

The top and middle order offered immense support to their skipper. While opener Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early for 24, KL Rahul played a brilliant, patient knock of 100 off 165 deliveries, forming a vital partnership with Gill. Sai Sudharsan also looked in pristine touch, missing out on a century but contributing a crucial 81 off 104 balls.

Once the platform was firmly laid, the dynamic Rishabh Pant took charge, smashing a rapid 81 off 121 balls, laced with 9 fours and 6 towering sixes. Down the order, Washington Sundar provided the final flourish with an unbeaten 52. Despite an exhaustive effort from Afghanistan’s Mohammad Saleem, who picked up an impressive 6-wicket haul for 140 runs—the visitors simply could not contain India’s scoring rate of 4.44 runs per over.

Manav Suthar stars with six-for as India’s relentless attack overwhelms Afghanistan

Faced with a mountain of runs, Afghanistan’s batting unit collapsed under the intense pressure applied by the Indian bowling attack. In their first innings, the visitors were bundled out for a meager 152 in 58.4 overs. Emerging left-arm spinner Manav Suthar was the absolute destroyer-in-chief, registering a phenomenal six-wicket haul (6/33) in his 22 overs, maintaining an unbelievable economy rate of 1.50.

Suthar completely dismantled Afghanistan’s middle and lower order, rendering Rahmat Shah‘s resilient fighting knock of 60 off 135 balls futile. Paceman Prasidh Krishna also bowled beautifully, chipping in with 3/37 to snap up early breakthroughs.

Enforcing the follow-on, India’s bowlers refused to ease their grip on the match. Afghanistan’s second innings mirrored the first, collapsing for just 112 runs in 35.5 overs. This time, all-rounder Sundar stepped into the spotlight, taking 4/36 to slice straight through the batting card. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav joined the party late to clean up the tail, finishing with quick figures of 3/30. Suthar added one more wicket to his match tally, while opener Sediqullah Atal top-scored for the visitors with a brief 42.
