Fans rally behind SKY in sympathy as reports hint at his removal as India’s T20I captain

In the volatile world of Indian cricket, fortunes can flip overnight. Just three short months ago, Suryakumar Yadav was on top of the world, leading the Men in Blue to a historic T20 World Cup triumph on home soil. Today, he finds himself at the center of a brewing storm.

Recent reports sending shockwaves through the cricketing community suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is ready to strip the star batter of his T20I captaincy and drop him from the squad altogether ahead of the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. The sudden news has triggered a massive wave of emotional support from fans worldwide, who are rallying behind the beloved cricketer during one of the toughest phases of his career.

Suryakumar Yadav faces potential axe from India’s T20I captaincy, suggest reports

According to The Indian Express reports  emerging from top BCCI sources, the national selection committee, alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir, has decided to transition into a new leadership cycle. This means looking past Suryakumar for the immediate future. The ruthless decision comes as India prepares for its upcoming European assignments, starting with two T20Is in Ireland followed by a high-stakes five-match series in England later this month.

A senior BCCI official confirmed the radical shift, stating that while ‘SKY’ successfully steered India to a World Cup title, the leadership group believes it is time to build for the future. The board plans to officially convey the decision to the Mumbai batter shortly, effectively ending his stint as skipper.

For the fans, this felt like an unceremonious betrayal. Social media platforms have been flooded with emotional messages, trending hashtags, and fan art under the banner of solidarity. Cricket enthusiasts are fiercely arguing that a captain who just delivered a World Cup trophy deserves far more leniency and respect. The collective sentiment online is clear: tactical transitions are understandable, but completely discarding a world-class match-winner feels incredibly harsh.

Suryakumar’s dismal run with the bat

While the emotional outrage from the fans is palpable, cricket selectors are looking closely at a cold, worrying reality: Suryakumar’s prolonged run of poor form. The once-unstoppable 360-degree batter has endured a brutal patch over the past two years, reaching a definitive low point during the recently concluded 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Playing for the Mumbai Indians, Surya looked like a shadow of his former dominant self. Despite signing off his campaign with a fighting half-century against the Rajasthan Royals, his overall tournament numbers were alarming. In 13 innings, he managed a meager 270 runs at an uncharacteristic average of 20.76.

Even during India’s triumphant run in March, Surya’s individual batting sat under an intense microscope. He inherited the T20I captaincy following Rohit Sharma‘s retirement after the 2024 World Cup victory in the West Indies. Striking a balance between personal form and leading an elite squad has clearly taken a heavy toll.

Reflecting on his leadership mindset in a poignant interview earlier this year, Surya had shared:

Since I took captaincy, I never paid attention to personal things, I always had 14 more people with me, and looking after them is just as important. The team was winning, I knew I was going in the right direction, and I knew my runs would come. In 2024, that catch changed my life. Now, after winning this World Cup as captain, I feel my life will change again.”

His words have proved prophetic, though perhaps not in the way he had hoped. As the selectors prepare to name a new skipper for the upcoming cycle, fans continue to loudly voice their support, holding out hope that India’s premier T20 explosive weapon can find his spark and fight his way back into national colours.
