Matt Renshaw produced a determined batting performance in the opening Test between Australia and South Africa, bringing up a long-awaited century under pressure. After Australia lost six wickets for 124 runs on Day 1, the left-handed batter stood firm against South Africa’s pace attack to keep his side in the contest.

Renshaw resumed on Day 2 alongside captain Pat Cummins after their stubborn partnership helped Australia reach 187/6 before bad light stopped play on the opening evening. He continued to frustrate the hosts with disciplined defence and timely attacking strokes, eventually reaching three figures for the second time in his Test career.

Australia elected to bat first but struggled to build partnerships against a disciplined South African bowling attack. Steve Smith scored 25, while Marnus Labuschagne contributed 37 before the hosts tightened their grip on the innings. Anrich Nortje made an immediate impact on his return to Test cricket, dismissing Alex Carey for 14 and Beau Webster for four.

With Australia reduced to 124/6, the visitors faced the prospect of a disappointing first-innings total. Renshaw then combined with Cummins to put together a crucial 63-run partnership for the seventh wicket. The pair continued their resistance on Day 2, with Renshaw reaching 102 off 218 deliveries, including 10 boundaries. Cummins also contributed a valuable 43 off 98 balls before Wiaan Mulder broke through to put South Africa back on top.

Renshaw’s fighting century sparks reactions from fans

Renshaw’s innings stood out for the patience and composure he showed when Australia needed someone to take responsibility. Rather than attempting to force the pace against South Africa’s fast bowlers, he trusted his defence and waited for opportunities to score. His century also marked a significant personal milestone after a lengthy wait for another Test hundred.

With Australia at 277/8 during the opening session of Day 2, his effort had given the visitors a chance to push towards a more competitive total. Mulder led South Africa’s attack with four wickets, while Marco Jansen and Nortje claimed two apiece. Renshaw’s determined knock nevertheless became one of the major talking points of the opening Test.
