India’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe has generated plenty of debate among fans and cricket experts. The selectors made several changes to the squad that is currently touring England, handing opportunities to a number of young players while also resting a few senior members of the T20 setup.
However, one selection decision immediately grabbed the attention of supporters across social media. The absence of Sanju Samson from the squad came as a surprise to many, particularly after the wicketkeeper-batter played a crucial role in India’s triumphant T20 World Cup 2026 campaign earlier this year and remained part of the team’s plans for the upcoming Asian Games.
Sanju Samson’s omission becomes a major talking point
One of the biggest talking points from India’s squad announcement was the absence of Samson. While the BCCI did not specify a reason behind his omission, multiple reports have stated that the wicketkeeper-batter has been rested alongside Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Washington Sundar following a busy stretch of international cricket.
Despite those reports, many fans questioned the decision, pointing to Samson’s match-winning performances during India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign. Several supporters also felt the 31-year-old deserved a longer run in the side after helping India lift the title earlier this year.
India hand opportunities to youngsters for Zimbabwe tour
India’s squad features several fresh faces as the selectors continue to build depth in the T20I setup. Punjab Kings (PBKS) opener Prabhsimran Singh earned his maiden T20I call-up after an impressive IPL 2026 season, while Harsh Dubey, Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur also received their first opportunities in the shortest format.
The squad also marks the return of Rinku Singh and express pacer Mayank Yadav. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer will continue to lead the side, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain. According to reports, Samson remains part of India’s long-term T20 plans and is expected to travel with the squad for the Asian Games later this year.

Here’s how fans reacted:
I think it is imperative that the BCCI gives fans the reason why Sanju Samson isn’t in the team to Zimbabwe. Communication is crucial because otherwise people will arrive at their own conclusion. Because surely he cannot be dropped. Surely not.

The official line is Sanju Samson has been “rested”. He plays only T20s, has just been dropped from the XI and will be the only one amongst India’s T20 batting line up who’s been rested for Zimbabwe

Still can’t digest that Sanju Samson is out of the Zimbabwe series while bits-and-pieces players continue to find a place in the squad. If performances don’t earn consistent opportunities, what exactly does? #selectionpanel is that end of Sanju era ?

It’s unofficially official: Sanju Samson has been rested for the Zimbabwe T20I series. He is also the only frontline batter to be rested for the series.
