Bangladesh have suffered a setback ahead of their ongoing ODI tri-series in the United Arab Emirates, with captain Litton Das ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. The wicketkeeper-batter was unavailable for the opening match against Zimbabwe after failing to pass a fitness test, forcing the team management to make changes to its leadership and squad. With Afghanistan and Zimbabwe competing alongside Bangladesh in the tri-series, the absence of their regular captain presents a challenge for the Tigers.
Litton Das ruled out of UAE tri-series due to hip injury
Bangladesh team physio Bayezid Islam Khan confirmed that Litton had complained of pain in his right hip joint on Friday. Following the complaint, the medical team arranged an MRI scan, which revealed an issue with the affected area. Litton subsequently attempted to pass a fitness test on Saturday but failed to meet the required benchmark. As a result, the team management ruled him out of the remainder of the tri-series.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named left-handed batter Parvez Hossain Emon as Litton’s replacement, while ODI vice-captain Towhid Hridoy will take over the leadership responsibilities for the tournament.
“We conducted an MRI after Litton complained about a pain in his right hip joint. The MRI revealed that he has some issues in his right hip joint. He tried to pass a fitness test today but he could not hit the benchmark. So, he is out for this series,” Bayezid said in a statement released by the BCB.
Litton was appointed Bangladesh’s full-time ODI captain in July, replacing Mehidy Hasan Miraz. He had already been leading the national T20I side since May 2025. His absence is another setback after he missed Bangladesh’s tour of Zimbabwe in July because of injury concerns. The wicketkeeper-batter had, however, recently impressed in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi. He scored 53 and 102 in the drawn match and also took eight catches.
Towhid Hridoy to captain Bangladesh in Litton’s absence
ODI vice-captain Towhid Hridoy will lead Bangladesh for the remainder of the tri-series, marking his first stint as the team’s captain in the 50-over format. He has previously captained the Tigers in six T20Is. Bangladesh were also without Mehid for their opening match against Zimbabwe due to a fever.
Fast bowler Nahid Rana remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from a side strain. Bangladesh will face Afghanistan on October 21, with the tri-series final scheduled for October 23. Hridoy will now have the responsibility of guiding the side through the remaining fixtures without its regular ODI captain.
